Sr Technology Manager, Technical Product Owner R&D Labs

About the role
The Sr. Manager, TPO R&D Labs serves as the primary owner of global R&D Lab technology products supporting traditional R&D labs and R&D medical device software development labs. This role partners closely with R&D, R&D lab technicians, cyber security, and IT stakeholders to translate business and scientific needs into scalable, compliant technology solutions. The role has a direct impact on accelerating innovation, improving data quality, and enabling efficient research and development that supports DePuy Synthes’ orthopedic portfolio. This position plays a critical role in modernizing the R&D Lab employee experience while supporting innovation, cyber security, compliance, and operational excellence across DePuy Synthes R&D Labs, and reports into the DePuy Synthes Technology organization.
Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate its Orthopedics business to establish a standalone orthopedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. Responsibilities
- Own the product vision, roadmap, and lifecycle for R&D Lab applications, ensuring alignment with business, technology, and cyber security strategies.
- Partner with R&D Labs, IT, and cyber security stakeholders to translate lab-specific needs into clear product requirements and priorities.
- Lead backlog management, prioritization, and release planning, balancing value, risk, and regulatory requirements.
- Drive delivery of secure, compliant, and scalable R&D Lab solutions, ensuring adherence to J&J Credo, data privacy, and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external vendors to deliver high-quality solutions on time and within scope.
- Establish and monitor product performance metrics, user adoption, and continuous improvement opportunities.
- Lead change management and communication efforts to ensure successful global adoption across R&D Labs.
- Mentor and guide junior product owners or analysts, fostering strong product management practices.
- Lead the application of AI, advanced analytics, and automation to modernize R&D platforms, accelerating product development, improving scientific and engineering insights, and strengthening end-to-end decision-making, while enabling scalable, compliant, and efficient R&D operations from discovery through lifecycle management.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, Human Resources, or a related field (required). Master’s degree or MBA (preferred).
- 8-10 years of progressive experience in IT product management, product ownership, or technology leadership roles.
- Proven experience owning R&D Lab applications.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure needs for R&D labs.
- Strong understanding of Agile and product management methodologies.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams in complex, regulated environments.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technology solutions and roadmaps.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and decision-making skills.
- English (required).
- Up to 15% domestic and/or international travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Medical Device R&D labs.
- Experience with cyber security requirements for R&D product software development labs.
- Familiarity with data privacy, compliance, and validation requirements in regulated industries.
- Prior people-leadership or matrix leadership experience.
- Product Owner, Agile, or Project Management certifications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to influence without authority in a matrixed organization.

Pay
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $137,000.00 - $235,750.00.
