Machinify is a leading healthcare intelligence company with expertise across the payment continuum, delivering unmatched value, transparency, and efficiency to health plan clients across the country. Deployed by over 85 health plans, including many of the top 20, and representing more than 270 million lives, Machinify combines a fully configurable, AI-powered platform with best-in-class expertise to reimagine financial outcomes and drive down healthcare costs.

About the role

In this role, you'll set technical direction for backend development, leveraging deep programming expertise to design and build scalable, reliable web application systems. You'll work alongside AI coding agents as a core part of your workflow, directing and reviewing their output while maintaining a high bar for quality. The ideal candidate has strong experience in application design and system architecture, along with a proven ability to drive adoption of new languages, tools, and agentic development practices across a team.

You'll join a highly visible engineering team trusted to solve complex, high-stakes problems using AI, data, and software systems. Your work will have a significant impact on our customers and future product lines, with technical decisions influencing systems that affect millions of lives. The role involves partnering cross-functionally to influence product direction, working directly with customers, and owning systems that deliver real-world outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Deepen your understanding of the healthcare claims and payments domain.
  • Act as a developer coach and multiplier—build production-grade services while setting standards, mentoring others, and elevating the team’s programming maturity.
  • Serve as the backend voice in cross-team planning and execution, ensuring alignment and collaboration across functions.
  • Contribute to new product development for complex in-browser applications, ensuring extensibility, scalability, and security.
  • Balance customer-facing features with technical debt cleanup to maintain a sustainable software suite.
  • Architect and implement applications that apply ML techniques to large volumes of data, simplifying labor-intensive processes through intuitive user experience.
  • Design systems that deliver high performance and reliability.
  • Integrate agentic engineering practices into the team’s workflow and drive adoption.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in backend programming (full-stack experience highly desired).
  • Proven experience designing and shipping customer-facing web application products.
  • Meaningful experience with Java or Scala; Rust highly desired.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems that run reliably on cloud services at scale (high throughput, high availability).
  • Ability to write a Technical Design Document (TDD) that peers and product leads can trust and understand, translating ambiguous product intent into concrete backend design.
  • A product and user-driven mindset—connecting technical decisions to real-world outcomes and caring about impact, not just implementation.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering peers, senior PMs, ML/DS partners, and leadership.
  • A pragmatic approach paired with strong systems instincts—focusing on root causes, not symptoms.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in a production setting.
  • Ability to read, understand, and improve complex code while owning code quality.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a high-growth, high-stakes environment.
  • Comfort with complexity and curiosity to define the path forward proactively.

Nice to have

  • Technical leadership in Rust best practices—idioms, safety, and performance—as the team scales adoption across greenfield projects.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science (or equivalent experience).

Benefits

  • Work from anywhere in the U.S. (digital-first company).
  • Top-tier medical, dental, and vision offerings.
  • FSA/HSA.
  • Tuition reimbursement.
  • Competitive salary and 401(k) with company match.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Additional health and wellness benefits and perks.
  • Flexible and trusting environment where you’re empowered to do your best work.

Pay

Salary range: $200,000–$250,000. Compensation is determined by factors such as years of experience, depth of expertise, skills, and certifications. This role may qualify for different levels, and the recruiting team will clarify if a different range applies.
