Sr. Software Engineer - Distributed Databases
About the role
The Senior Software Engineer will take ownership of designing, improving, and scaling a distributed database platform focused on secure and efficient authorization management. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to collaborate across engineering and product teams.
Responsibilities
- Research, design, implement, test, and release new database features and enhancements.
- Improve database performance, scalability, and reliability through architecture improvements and optimization efforts.
- Troubleshoot correctness, stability, and performance challenges within complex distributed systems.
- Optimize query execution through improved planning, statistics gathering, indexing strategies, caching approaches, and materialized views.
- Develop and refine database capabilities, including incremental view maintenance and query optimization techniques.
- Contribute to both open-source and enterprise software solutions.
- Analyze system behavior and identify opportunities to improve latency, efficiency, and resource utilization.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, product, and support teams to deliver impactful technical solutions.
- Participate in modern software development practices, including code reviews, testing, continuous integration, and deployment workflows.
Requirements
- The ideal candidate is a highly experienced software engineer with a strong background in distributed systems, database technologies, and performance optimization.
- They should be comfortable working on complex infrastructure challenges and communicating technical concepts effectively.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience developing software using system-level programming languages such as Go, C/C++, Rust, or Zig.
- A strong understanding of database internals, including query planning, indexing, compilers, optimization techniques, and materialized views.
- Deep systems engineering experience with distributed systems, operating systems, or database technologies.
- Proven ability to identify performance bottlenecks and design creative, scalable solutions.
- Experience building reliable, high-performance software for complex technical environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Able to collaborate effectively with distributed teams across multiple time zones.
- Familiarity with modern engineering practices and tools such as CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Git, and automated testing.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and cloud-native database environments is a plus.
- Experience with authorization systems, access control models, or security-focused infrastructure is a plus.
- Advanced coursework or expertise in database systems is a plus.
