Sr Software Engineer

About the role

Reporting to the Director of IT Applications, the Sr Software Engineer will design, develop, enhance, support, and modernize business applications on the IBM iSeries platform. The role collaborates with stakeholders across Supply Chain, Finance, Distribution, EDI, Sales, and Manufacturing to deliver reliable solutions for critical enterprise processes.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, implement, and support applications on IBM iSeries using RPG IV, RPGLE, Free‑Format RPG, SQLRPGLE, and CL.
• Analyze business requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
• Support and enhance mission‑critical ERP, WMS, distribution, finance, and supply chain systems.
• Develop and maintain DB2 for iSeries database structures, SQL queries, stored procedures, and performance‑tuning initiatives.
• Create and support integrations via APIs, web services, EDI, message queues, and file‑based interfaces.
• Troubleshoot application issues and participate in root‑cause analysis for production support incidents.
• Collaborate with business users to identify process‑improvement and automation opportunities.
• Participate in code reviews and enforce development standards, security practices, and documentation requirements.
• Support application modernization, transitioning legacy fixed‑format RPG to free‑format RPG and service‑program architectures.
• Work effectively within Waterfall, Agile, and hybrid project delivery environments.
• Mentor other software engineers and share IBM iSeries best practices.
• Utilize sound engineering principles to build robust, secure, scalable, and well‑tested features from end to end.
• Build confidence and rapport with internal and external clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
• 5–10 years of IBM i / AS400 development experience.
• Strong experience with RPG IV, RPGLE, Free‑Format RPG, CL programming, SQLRPGLE, and DB2 for iSeries.
• Proficiency with IBM Rational Developer for iSeries, Git or Azure DevOps, SQL Services for IBM iSeries, Web Services/API integration, EDI, FTP/SFTP, automation, Power Systems, and high‑availability solutions.
• Experience designing and maintaining batch processing, interactive programs, and business applications on IBM iSeries.
• Ability to troubleshoot performance issues across applications and DB2 databases.
• Familiarity with source control and deployment management processes.
• Experience gathering requirements directly from business stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience building and maintaining metrics, alarms, and monitoring of services and application stack.
• Proven ability to deliver roadmap initiatives using Waterfall or Agile methodologies.
