About the role
The Senior Software Engineer at Badger Meter is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting scalable software solutions that power Badger Meter's connected products and digital platforms. This role serves as a technical leader on complex projects, partnering closely with Product Management, Quality Assurance, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver high-quality software that meets customer and business needs.
Responsibilities
- Analyze product and business requirements and translate them into technical specifications and software designs.
- Design, develop, test, and deploy high-quality software solutions using modern software engineering principles and practices.
- Lead technical design discussions and provide architectural guidance for new features and products.
- Write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code.
- Participate in code reviews and promote best practices for software development.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across applications and services.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of software products.

Qualifications
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field.
- 7+ years of professional software development experience.
- Experience designing and developing commercial software applications.
- Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, JavaScript, or similar.
- Experience with cloud-based platforms and distributed systems.
- Agenic mindset with a proven track record of leveraging AI coding tools—such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or OpenAI Codex—to meaningfully accelerate delivery, not just as a novelty but as a core part of your workflow.
- Experience working within Agile software development environments.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, testing methodologies, and source control systems.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Preferred:
- Experience with AWS, Azure, or other cloud platforms.
- Experience developing SaaS, IoT, analytics, or data-driven applications.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Experience mentoring engineers or serving as a technical lead.
- Experience working with scalable, high-availability systems.
