About the role

The Senior Software Developer – HIE Production Support is a hands-on engineering role focused on sustaining, enhancing, and remediating a large-scale, mission-critical Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform operating in a 24x7 production environment. This role blends senior-level software development responsibilities with deep production support ownership, including root cause analysis, defect remediation, and proactive platform health improvements across healthcare interoperability solutions. The developer serves as a technical authority, partner, and mentor—supporting live production systems, guiding technical design decisions, and ensuring stability, scalability, and data quality across the HIE stack.

Responsibilities

  • Production Support & Platform Reliability
    • Provide senior-level technical support for LIVE, 24x7 HIE production environments, ensuring system availability, performance, and data integrity.
    • Perform detailed root cause analysis (RCA) for production incidents and lead remediation through code fixes, configuration changes, and architectural improvements.
    • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex issues across interfaces, applications, and integrations with minimal participant impact.
    • Participate in after-hours support as needed to provide Level-2/3 support for Severity 1/0 issues.
  • Software Development & Engineering
    • Design, develop, unit test, and maintain software components supporting healthcare data ingestion, transformation, validation, and exchange.
    • Produce clean, maintainable, and efficient code aligned with enterprise development standards and secure coding best practices.
    • Enhance existing software and integration components to improve performance, resiliency, scalability, and maintainability.
    • Ensure quality through functional, unit, and performance testing; partner with testing teams to review and update test plans to reflect code changes from enhancements, redesigns, and bug fixes.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate technical and operational requirements into well-designed software solutions.
  • Healthcare Interoperability & Integration
    • Develop and support healthcare interfaces utilizing interoperability standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, CDA/CCD, IHE profiles, and X12.
    • Serve as a technical expert for Intersystems HealthShare Ecosystem.
    • Advise on interface and integration design best practices to ensure long-term supportability and production readiness.
    • Support historical data remediation and continuous data quality improvement initiatives within the HIE.
  • Technical Leadership & Collaboration
    • Partner with operations, architecture, R&D, and customer-facing teams to identify risks, estimate level of effort, and implement reliable solutions.
    • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to leadership, stakeholders, and non-technical audiences.
    • Author technical documentation including RCA reports, design remediation plans, and implementation specifications for internal and external use.
    • Stay current on industry trends in healthcare interoperability, cloud-enabled integration platforms, and modern software development practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on software development experience, including support of production systems.
  • Advanced experience with Intersystems HealthShare Ecosystem.
  • Strong experience developing and supporting healthcare interfaces using interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, CDA, IHE, X12).
  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex, production-impacting software and integration issues.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL, APIs, JavaScript, and ObjectScript, with hands-on experience supporting, enhancing, and troubleshooting production applications.
  • Experience translating technical requirements into working software and communicating solutions to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in customer-facing and matrixed team environments.
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple integration engines (e.g., Intersystems Ensemble, Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf).
  • Exposure to SAS platforms, analytics, or reporting tools within healthcare workflows.
  • Experience supporting large-scale HIEs, population health systems, or public sector healthcare platforms.
  • Linux background a plus, including familiarity with command-line tools, file systems, log analysis, and supporting applications in a Linux-based environment.
  • Knowledge of production monitoring, performance tuning, and operational readiness best practices.
  • Prior experience mentoring junior developers or serving as a technical lead in production environments.

Additional Competencies, Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills with a production-first mindset.
  • High ownership and accountability for system reliability and operational excellence.
