About the Role
The Sr. Quality Engineer will improve production processes and the quality of copper and stainless steel-alloy strips. This fully on-site role is located in Waterbury, CT, with 15-25% occasional travel to other locations.
Base Salary Range: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year. Eligibility for a variable compensation plan bonus based on company performance may apply.
Responsibilities
- Implement the company’s quality policy and procedures for laboratory personnel using the Quality Management System.
- Accept or reject base stock material based on conformity to purchasing specifications.
- Change processing routers as needed to accommodate available resources.
- Authorize rework of non-conforming material to meet customer specifications.
- Reject non-conforming material on the shop floor and initiate remakes.
- Authorize material returns from customers.
- Adhere to Wieland’s Safety Culture.
- Develop quality steps for new and existing products.
- Assist with management of the ISO 9000 quality system and serve as an internal auditor.
- Perform internal and process audits as required by ISO 9001 certification.
- Organize and manage management review meetings for the quality management system.
- Assist in all quality audit functions for customers and outside surveillance audits.
- Review mechanical properties of processed material to meet customer specifications and adjust processing as needed.
- Evaluate non-conformance of in-process material and determine disposition (rework, reject, or remake).
- Support Sales and Technical Service with customer expectations, including dimensional layouts, capability studies, and root cause investigations.
- Evaluate customer complaints and rejections, determining disposition of returned material.
- Assist with administering the calibration system.
- Support manufacturing with procedures, processing, and material issues.
- Conduct experiments to develop processing parameters for new items or alloys and evaluate causes of non-conformance.
- Monitor and track process variables for Continuous Improvement of mechanical properties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering or science (preferred).
- 4-7 years’ experience in a quality engineering role or equivalent work experience.
- Familiarity with ASTM standards for copper and stainless steel, and ability to interpret them.
- Experience with SAP ERP system (preferred).
- Experience in metals processing for copper-base and stainless-steel alloys (preferred).
- Understanding of metals processing equipment such as rolling mills, annealing furnaces, leveling lines, and slitting equipment (preferred).
- Ability to understand metallurgical properties within various metal systems.
- Knowledgeable in ISO 9001 and TS 16949 standards (internal auditor certification preferred).
- Effective root cause analysis skills.
- Familiarity with SPC, PPAP, APQP, FMEA, Control Plans, and Quality Improvement Techniques.
- Certified Six Sigma – minimum Yellow Belt (preferred).
- Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Basic understanding of electroplating of metal strip products (preferred).
- Ability to work in a manufacturing facility with a laboratory environment.
- Strong communication skills across all levels of the organization.
