About the Role
Manage transmission, substation, distribution, gas, and/or information technology projects involving cross-functional teams across multiple disciplines and operating areas, including contract resources. Responsible for managing scope, schedule, budget, and safety performance of multiple projects and programs with budgets typically ranging from $250K to $15 million. May also manage business initiative projects with direct accountability for execution using limited resources.
Position may require extended hours during storms or energy delivery emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Oversee overall project performance for major transmission, substation, distribution, gas construction, new technology programs, information technology, and organizational initiatives.
- Ensure project costs, schedule, and scope are managed within approved limits, including developing recovery plans.
- Interface with external and internal stakeholders to coordinate project requirements.
- Serve as primary communicator with sponsors and key stakeholders on project issues, including executive-level and interdepartmental presentations.
- Foster strong working relationships between the project team, line managers, and interfacing organizations.
- Coach and lead team members to ensure completion of assigned tasks.
- Identify and obtain project team resources, ensuring team members understand their responsibilities.
- Manage business cases, capital approvals, project scheduling, requirements engineering, design and engineering tasks, vegetation management reviews, project reporting, financial analysis, major equipment procurement, environmental analysis, real estate acquisition, and relationship management with external customers, vendors, townships, and regulatory agencies.
- Perform project quality assurance and change management.
- Interact routinely with senior management, large utility customers, and governmental/regulatory officials.
Requirements
- For construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and 4-7 years of relevant project management experience, OR High School Diploma and 6-9 years of relevant project management experience.
- For non-construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or related field and 4-7 years of relevant project management experience, OR High School Diploma and 6-9 years of relevant project management experience.
- Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or achieve CAPM within two years of job entry (PMP certification fulfills this requirement).
- Demonstrated success managing projects, ability to work independently and lead teams, handle conflicting priorities, and strong independent judgment.
- Strong interpersonal and time management skills.
- Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP or CAPM certification.
- Strict attention to detail, including reviewing and validating time/material-based contracts with a questioning attitude.
- Strong documentation skills for project-related matters (meeting minutes, action items, critical documents, emails).
- Deep knowledge of schedules, earned value management, critical path method (CPM), and successor/predecessor relationships.
- Ability to lead schedule-based meetings (e.g., push-pull planning, CPM) without direct software use.
- In-depth understanding of risk registers, identifying and mitigating project risks, and managing contingency.
- Strong financial acumen, including cash-flow management, budget ownership, forecasting, and long-range budgeting.
- Proven problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership abilities to guide cross-functional teams.
- Strategic thinker aligning project execution with organizational goals.
- Ability to work independently, identify parallel/serial work streams, and require minimal guidance.
