Sr. Project Engineer

About the Role

This position is accountable for providing project engineering support to the Company. This includes developing bid packages for subcontractors, calculating project costs, selecting suppliers, procuring materials and services, interpreting project plans, scheduling project work activities, providing project oversight, interfacing with project personnel (primarily Superintendents, Foremen, and Surveyors), and helping to ensure successful project completion and closeout. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, with Integrity as the foundation.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Project Management Team to ensure the successful completion of ongoing or new projects.
  • Monitors actual costs and completes current project(s), accounting for materials, services, labor, and other associated costs.
  • Develops bid packages for subcontractors.
  • Procures subcontractors, permanent materials, consumables, and services from suppliers as required by project needs.
  • Interprets project plans and specifications.
  • Schedules project work activities according to plan timelines to ensure timely project completion.
  • Provides interface with project team members, suppliers, customers, and others involved in project work.
  • Ensures project team members are provided a safe work environment and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies.
  • Assists in the development of bid proposals for upcoming marine construction and services projects as needed.
  • Drives regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives to contribute to compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of co-workers, authorized to stop work if unsafe conditions are observed.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and Company policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as assigned (e.g., certification training, safety training, procedure review).
  • Maintains confidentiality of all proprietary or trade secret information belonging to the Company.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline, with 5 years of experience (or equivalent work experience).
  • Prior work experience in the marine construction industry as a Summer Intern or Co-op Engineer is preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of Project Management & Administration, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.
  • Ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business and be an effective communicator.
  • Ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Willingness to work out-of-town for extended periods of time.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
  • Must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, and personal flotation devices (PFDs).
  • Ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as directed by Safety Representatives or management.
  • Capable of evacuating work areas in a timely manner during emergencies.
  • Capable of walking, stepping, climbing, or moving between job site locations, including getting onto and off work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to adapt to extreme temperature changes and prolonged outdoor exposure.
