About the role
As a Senior Professional Staff Nurse, you’ll be a key member of our care team, setting the standard for high-quality nursing care. You’ll lead patient care activities, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and support a healing environment through compassionate, evidence-based practice.
Responsibilities
- Applying the nursing process through Relationship-Based Care
- Create personalized care plans with patients and families
- Communicate effectively with care teams
- Identify and address clinical and psychosocial needs
- Lead or participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Mentor new nurses and students
- Engage in shared governance and professional development
- Promote a healthy, inclusive workplace culture
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Master’s in Nursing or related field may substitute for certification requirement
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
- Must receive and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on annual Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluations
- Complete 2 professional contributions annually (or 1 contribution with certification), aligned with department, hospital, or system goals and approved by Unit Director per UPMC’s My Nursing Career Ladder

- Capable of working in a fast-paced, complex environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment
- Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning
- Demonstrates cultural awareness and contributes to a healthy workplace
Education & Experience
- Current RN license in Pennsylvania or a compact state
- CPR (BLS) certification per AHA standards (didactic + skills demo) within 30 days of hire
- ACLS, PALS, and NIMS certifications within 6 months of hire
- UPMC-approved nursing certification (not required if Master’s or DNP is held)
