Responsibilities
- Identify opportunities to improve clinical quality, patient outcomes, and workplace practices.
- Apply evidence-based practice in daily patient care.
- Participate in or lead initiatives that improve patient care and promote a healthy work environment.
- Demonstrate advanced clinical assessment, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Serve as a role model for professional nursing practice.
- Act as a clinical expert, educator, resource nurse, and/or evidence-based practice champion.
- Provide constructive feedback to members of the healthcare team.
- Participate in nursing peer review and shared governance activities.
- Serve on unit-based and hospital-wide councils and committees.
Education & Staff Development
- Precept and mentor students, graduate nurses, and newly hired staff.
- Identify learning opportunities that enhance patient care and team performance.
- Support continuous learning through research, professional resources, unit presentations, and journal clubs.
- Seek and incorporate feedback for professional growth and development.
Patient Care & Relationship-Based Practice
- Apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care.
- Develop individualized plans of care that address patients’ physical, emotional, social, psychological, and spiritual needs.
- Partner with patients and families to establish daily goals and promote healing environments.
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members to ensure high-quality, coordinated care.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient documentation.
- Promote patient safety, quality outcomes, and an exceptional patient experience.
Teamwork & Healthy Workplace Culture
- Foster positive working relationships with colleagues and interdisciplinary team members.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and culturally aware work environment.
- Help prevent and address workplace conflict, incivility, and impairment concerns.
- Balance priorities effectively through organization, delegation, and accountability.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
- Demonstrated ability to provide age-appropriate care across the lifespan.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, problem-solving, and assessment skills.
- Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with patients, families, providers, leaders, and staff.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, lift, and assist with patient positioning as needed.
Professional Requirements
- Maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher annual performance evaluation.
- Complete an approved professional contribution annually or obtain and maintain a UPMC-approved nursing certification within one year of hire/transfer.
- Certification requirement may be waived for nurses with a Master’s in Nursing or DNP.
Licensure & Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania or a qualifying Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
- BLS/CPR certification required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards).
