About the role

The technician is responsible for various work assignments involving Distributed Control System (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) control logic programming, configuration, documentation, and troubleshooting, as well as DCS and PLC hardware troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance.

  • Generate process controls design packages following MLI Engineering Project Guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Create and update control system documentation such as cause and effect interlock matrices, I/O mapping, and control narratives.
  • Play a key role in training/mentoring entry-level Process Control Technicians.
  • Provide technical leadership in maintaining automation standards, software, and hardware infrastructure, and system optimization for plant process control systems and control schemes.
  • Provide technical assistance to Engineering team members or other department team members.
  • Stay current with the latest automation hardware and software technologies, process controls, process simulation, and networking.
  • Understand/analyze existing DCS configuration and PLC control logic, recommend solutions, and complete projects to address identified issues.
  • Demonstrate expertise in understanding and troubleshooting Process Controls communication media and protocols including Modbus and Ethernet.
  • Monitor and address control system issues for DCSs, PLCs, Variable Frequency Drives, and related devices.
  • Perform hands-on fixes, including installations and upgrades.
  • Identify problematic areas and inform internal customers of possible solutions.
  • Provide commissioning and start-up support for new or existing control systems.
  • Uphold all MLI policies and the “MLI Code of Conduct.”
  • Ensure strict compliance with Environmental and Safety regulations.
  • Comply with and demonstrate individual accountability for the MLI Quality System and ISO Registration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support and sustain a high-performing team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of previous experience in Process Control and Systems Engineering in a chemical work environment or relevant field.
  • Thorough knowledge of Statistics, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), Root Cause Analysis, and Variable Process Control.
  • Working knowledge of computers and MS Office software.
  • Working knowledge of arithmetic and grammar.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Read and understand repair manuals and drawings.
    • Apply proper safety practices and follow procedures while performing maintenance tasks.
    • Read blueprints and P&ID drawings.
    • Review and analyze data with a focus on process optimization.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions in English.
    • Manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously to meet established deadlines.
    • Work as a team and/or independently.
    • Perform tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, onsite in Moses Lake, WA.

Pay

Summary pay range: $80,000–$118,000, based on candidate experience, qualifications, and market considerations.

Working Conditions

Duties are generally performed indoors in an office and high-purity manufacturing environment. The noise level in the manufacturing work environment is occasionally loud. Employees will work in a covered Process Safety Management (PSM) environment containing threshold quantities of flammable liquids and/or gasses that have a potential for fire or explosion. Employees working in this environment are required to be free from devices that are not considered intrinsically safe, such as insulin pumps, pacemakers, or pain management devices.
