About the role

Bloom Energy is pioneering solutions that empower critical industries to thrive in a rapidly digitizing, energy-intensive world. Our solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC) technologies deliver energy abundance for data centers, hospitals, electric grids, manufacturing, and utilities. As the Sr Principal Engineer, Enclosures Design, you will own the design and development of advanced closures systems for Bloom’s current and next-generation products. This fully on-site role is based in San Jose, CA, and requires five days a week in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and integration of next-generation enclosures, including structural and closures systems (sheet metal, latches, hinges, and sealing).
  • Package and integrate mechanical and electrical components, ensuring proper kinematics and clearance.
  • Manage BOM structures and design changes.
  • Create and modify 3D solid models in SolidWorks.
  • Investigate system quality issues, lifetime, or reliability problems; mitigate future issues through root-cause analysis.
  • Architect sealing and weatherproofing strategies for long-life deployments.
  • Lead enclosure benchmarking for current and future products.
  • Manage performance and regulatory testing.
  • Interpret and develop Tolerance Analysis, CAE, DFM, DFMEA, and PFMEA simulations; integrate feedback into product designs.
  • Conduct root-cause failure analysis and implement corrective design improvements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external suppliers to support enclosure development milestones and prototype/production build events.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with evidence of exceptional ability.
  • 12+ years of mechanical design experience in structural systems and enclosure design.
  • Proven track record of ownership of enclosure and seal designs from concept through production.
  • Strong background in DFMA for sheet metal, weldments, extrusions, and assemblies.
  • Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks).
  • Comfortable moving between analysis, prototyping, and hands-on debugging.
  • Experience using FEA to guide real engineering decisions.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and hit aggressive schedules.

Preferred experience includes automotive industry delivery of cars/trucks or NEMA 4X-compliant enclosures, sealing strategies, and manufacturing approaches for real-world deployments lasting decades.

Pay

Salary range: $196,000 – $282,000, plus standard company benefits. Total compensation is based on relevant skills and experience.
