Sr. Plant Operations Specialist (POII)

About the role

The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) seeks a Senior Plant Operations Specialist (Wastewater Plant Operator (POII)) to join their team. This position is responsible for monitoring plant operations, adjusting equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational policies.

Responsibilities

• Performs as a journey-level plant operator; monitors operational processes and conditions; operates, adjusts, and performs routine predicted maintenance on plant equipment;
• Cleans and calibrates process meters; collects samples and conducts lab analysis as assigned;
• Reviews data and makes process adjustments; ensures compliance with applicable safety and operational policies and procedures;
• Inspects plant equipment and systems; performs predicted preventative maintenance, including performing minor repairs and maintaining lubricant levels in equipment;
• Ensures proper working condition and functioning of equipment and reports additional maintenance needs;
• Cleans equipment and assigned areas, including washing filters and removing sludge;
• Prepares, maintains, and reviews reports, records, logs, work orders, and other documentation;
• Maintains databases and online systems; enters, updates, compiles and submits information;
• Proofs and reviews work to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Requirements

• North Carolina Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator’s License (or higher)
• Two years of wastewater treatment experience and/or operations experience based on assignment
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• A valid, unrestricted, NC Class "C" Driver's License "or" willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Familiarity working with a wastewater plant/system via a SCADA interface
• Ability to make mixed arithmetic calculations involving multiplication, addition, subtraction, & division of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions
• Education in Biology or Environmental Science is a plus
• Strong mechanical skills are a plus
• CDL a plus, but not required

Skills

• Ability to perform basic math & chemistry calculations to accurately read meters & charts, maintain required records, & interpret readings to make necessary adjustments to treatment processes
• Experience with a water or wastewater plant/system via a SCADA interface
• Experience with MS Office applications (such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
• Current and valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Pay

Hiring Range: $52,903-$55,562

Schedule

7am -3pm/7:30am-3:30pm/8am-4pm, Weekend rotations and holidays (on occasion cover off shift rotations)
