About the role
This position combines deep payroll operations expertise with project support, process standardization, and cross-group collaboration to scale and strengthen enterprise payroll operations. The Sr. Payroll Specialist will support the operational stabilization of the Transportation payroll group as part of Marmon’s payroll centralization initiative, partnering closely with Group Payroll Managers on payroll migrations, process documentation, and operational alignment. The role also serves as a trusted operational partner within the centralized team, providing cross-group payroll support, backup coverage, and leadership on payroll process improvements.
Responsibilities
- Payroll Operations Leadership
- Support processing and review of complex multi-state payrolls ensuring accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Review payroll calculations including earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, and garnishments
- Reconcile payroll registers, tax liabilities, and general ledger postings
- Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries
- Act as a subject matter expert for payroll operations and provide guidance to payroll team members when needed
- Payroll Centralization & Transformation
- Support execution of Marmon’s payroll centralization roadmap across operating companies
- Assist with the operational stabilization of the Transportation payroll group
- Partner with Group Payroll Managers to support payroll migrations, onboarding of new operating companies, and process alignment
- Assist with developing standardized payroll procedures, documentation, and operational playbooks
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls, and scalability within the centralized payroll structure
- Strategic Payroll Projects
- Lead or support payroll-related projects including system implementations, process automation, and operational improvements
- Support enterprise initiatives impacting payroll operations across multiple operating companies
- Assist with payroll system testing, configuration updates, and enhancement initiatives
- Cross-Group Payroll Support
- Provide operational support to the Director of Payroll across multiple payroll groups as needed
- Provide backup support for other Marmon payroll groups during peak processing periods, absences, or transition periods
- Assist Group Payroll Managers with complex payroll issues, reconciliations, and escalations
- Compliance, Controls & Risk Management
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations
- Maintain compliance with CBAs
- Support payroll audits including internal, SOX, and external audits
- Ensure payroll processes align with internal control requirements and corporate policies
- Assist with documentation of payroll procedures and SOX control narratives
- Reporting & Payroll Analytics
- Develop payroll reports and analytics to support HR, Finance, and executive leadership
- Analyze payroll data to identify trends, risks, or operational improvement opportunities
- Assist with reconciliation of payroll data to financial reporting and internal reporting requirements
Requirements
- 5+ years of payroll experience in a multi-state, high-volume payroll environment
- Experience supporting multi-entity payroll operations
- Experience with enterprise payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, UKG, SAP, or similar
- Experience working with unions
- Experience supporting payroll system implementations, process improvements, or operational transformation initiatives preferred
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, HR, or related field preferred
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) – American Payroll Association (preferred)

- Strong knowledge of U.S. payroll laws, wage and hour regulations, and payroll tax requirements
- Understanding of payroll operations within a multi-entity organizational structure
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

$69,600.00 - $104,400.00
