Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory testing, materials characterization, and failure analysis to support product development and issue resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive technical solutions and business objectives.
- Review technical documentation and extract critical information.
- Analyze, research, design, and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes to optimize materials for engineering design in structures, systems, and subsystems.
- Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, nonmetallic, and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication, and assembly processes.
- Develop, analyze, and apply material properties, design allowables, processing processes, and quality engineering specifications.
- Perform material analyses, including failure analysis of components, systems, and subsystems, life predictions, and definition of requirement specifications.
- Review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
- Act as a mentor to colleagues or direct the work of lower-level professionals.
- Deliver and oversee projects from design to implementation while adhering to policies.
Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of materials and their interactions with the body and environment.
- Ability to correlate material properties with product performance to predict various failure modes.
- Knowledge of international and domestic regulations associated with Materials of Concern, Biocompatibility, and Hazardous Substances (e.g., RoHS, EU MDR, California Prop. 65, ISO 10993).
- Knowledge and experience with Materials Characterization Techniques.
- University degree in a relevant field; minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
- Practical knowledge of project management.
- Works independently under limited supervision to determine and develop solutions.
- Coaches and reviews the work of lower-level specialists; may manage projects or processes.
- Communicates with senior internal and external customers and vendors to exchange information, influence decision-making, and achieve objectives.
Target years of experience: 2–10 years.
