About the role
The Senior Manager of Software Engineering at Extra Space Storage leads engineering teams in building software products that deliver value for customers and the business. Success in this role comes from supporting team members’ professional growth, providing short- to mid-term direction, and expanding technical expertise across the organization. Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership and Direction: Provide organizational and technical leadership across multiple teams by facilitating critical decisions, aligning stakeholders, establishing priorities, and communicating progress, risks, and outcomes across short-, medium-, and long-term planning horizons.
- Technical and Domain Expertise: Maintain and cultivate deep technical expertise while driving adoption of engineering best practices; expand organizational capabilities in scalability, reliability, security, maintainability, performance, and software quality.
- Business and Product Alignment: Leverage a strong understanding of business objectives, customer needs, and operational processes to influence product strategy, improve execution, and maximize business value.
- Value Delivery and Operational Excellence: Guide teams in achieving organizational objectives and key results; optimize software delivery processes; ensure efficient and predictable delivery of high-impact solutions.
- Leadership and Talent Development: Mentor and develop engineering team members through meaningful coaching, regular one-on-one discussions, feedback, and career planning; foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Talent Acquisition and Retention: Build and sustain high-performing engineering organizations by recruiting, hiring, developing, and retaining top talent while promoting an inclusive and engaging work environment; oversee the internship program to support long-term organizational growth.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant engineering and/or leadership experience (typical)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
- Experience with Agile methodology—Scrum and Kanban
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Performs sedentary work in an office environment with limited lifting (less than 10 pounds) or walking required.
- Close visual acuity required to perform work at a computer terminal.
- No exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
- Requires repetitive typing motion, talking, hearing, grasping, and feeling.
