Sr. Manager, Research Administration (Pre-Award)
Core Job Summary
The Senior Manager, Research Administration (Applications) for the Office of Research Administration works independently to review completed sponsored proposal applications and negotiate awards in adherence to sponsoring agency and organizational requirements. The Sr. Manager, Pre-Award Applications also provides institutional-level sponsored research administration services to various units and departments.
Core Job Functions
- Reviews, analyzes, negotiates, and endorses completed proposals and awards with a specific focus on corporate/industry funded clinical research and clinical trial projects.
- Supports the Executive Director and Associate Directors of Pre-Award in developing and delivering staff training on the unique requirements and complexities of corporate/industry funded clinical research and clinical trial projects.
- Ensures use of the correct processes, forms, and submission requirements.
- Communicates with extramural agencies on proposal and grant-related matters.
- Provides advice to staff regarding sponsored research administration issues, interpreting a broad range of sponsor policies, government regulations, and terms and conditions.
- Collaborates with other University groups such as Principal Investigators and study teams, Compliance, IRB (Human Subject Research Office), Risk Management, sponsors and other relevant offices to ensure that sponsored research projects are managed in an efficient and effective manner consistent with UM policies and procedures, and applicable agency guidelines, laws and regulations.
- Leverages real-time dashboards to monitor team performance, ensuring the team consistently meets or exceeds Service Level Agreement Key Performance Indicators.
- Drives a culture of accountability by basing team performance assessments on measurable data.
- Identifies process inefficiencies through data analysis and suggest/implement improvements.
- Provides updates and status reports to senior management on a regular basis by track relevant data using University systems and other tools and provides leadership with metrics, including through output and turnaround time.
Core Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required, Master’s degree in relevant field preferred.
- Certification and Licensing: CRA, CHRC, or CHRC certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, ideally in an academic setting. Appropriate combination of relevant education and/or experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of business and management principles.
- Extensive knowledge of research administration, preferably in academic institution clinical research.
- Knowledge of Sponsor and University systems (i.e., Huron Research suite, grants.gov, eRA Commons) preferred.
- Knowledge of financial principles, Medicare regulations, healthcare reimbursement principles, laws and regulations guiding clinical research.
- Ability to efficiently research complex information and use it for establishment and improvement of work processes, reporting and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment and professionalism.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with outstanding customer service skills.
- Professional experience and judgment to effectively serve faculty and sponsors while protecting, representing and advancing the University's best interests.
- Ability to work well under deadline pressures without sacrificing accuracy, customer service, collegiality or ethics.
- Ability to analyze, consolidate, and interpret clinical budgeting information.
- Ability to analyze, manage, facilitate, and evaluate work operations.
- Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
- Strong analytic skills.
