About the Role
The Disease Area Lead serves as the primary scientific and clinical subject matter expert within the Commercial Learning & Development organization. This role translates complex disease state knowledge, clinical data, and therapeutic insights into compelling, field-ready learning experiences for the commercial sales team. Positioned at the intersection of science, education, and commercial strategy, the Disease Area Lead partners with Medical Affairs, Marketing, and Regulatory to ensure training content is scientifically accurate, commercially relevant, and fully compliant with industry standards. This role directly contributes to building the clinical confidence and therapeutic expertise of the field team, enabling more impactful interactions with healthcare professionals and improved patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Disease State Education & Curriculum Development
- Serve as the organization's lead content expert for disease state education, developing and maintaining a comprehensive curriculum covering disease biology, patient journey, treatment landscape, and emerging science.
- Translate complex clinical and scientific information into clear, engaging, and field-ready learning content.
- Continuously update disease state training materials to reflect the latest clinical data, treatment guidelines, and competitive landscape developments.
- Ensure all content is grounded in adult learning principles and designed for maximum knowledge retention and field application.
- Training Delivery & Facilitation
- Deliver disease state training through instructor-led workshops, virtual learning sessions, new hire onboarding, and national/regional sales meetings.
- Facilitate engaging and scientifically rigorous training experiences that build clinical confidence and therapeutic expertise across the sales organization.
- Conduct field visits and coaching sessions to reinforce disease state knowledge and support real-world application.
- Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate closely with Medical Affairs, Marketing, Market Access, and Regulatory to ensure training content reflects the most current and strategically aligned scientific messaging.
- Partner with the broader Sales Training team to integrate product information, disease state education, and clinical data into the overall commercial training curriculum.
- Serve as a trusted scientific resource and thought partner to sales leadership, trainers, and field teams.
- Compliance & Governance
- Ensure all disease state training materials are submitted through and approved by the Medical, Legal, and Regulatory (MLR) review process to maintain compliance with industry standards and internal policies.
- Maintain current knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards governing disease state education in a pharmaceutical commercial environment.
- Uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity and promotional compliance across all training content and delivery.
- Field Readiness & Performance Support
- Collaborate with the Sales Training Lead to assess field knowledge gaps and evolve the disease state curriculum to address emerging learning needs and marketplace changes.
- Monitor the competitive and clinical landscape and proactively identify shifts that require updates to training content or approach.
- Partner with Sales Training leadership to measure the impact of disease state education on field performance and HCP engagement quality.
- Training Strategy & Curriculum Development
- Design, develop, and execute a comprehensive training strategy tailored to the unique needs of diverse commercial teams.
- Collaboration & Alignment
- Partner with functional leaders to align training content with brand strategy, field execution, and stakeholder engagement objectives.
- Metrics & Impact Assessment
- Define success metrics, evaluate training effectiveness, and continuously refine programs based on feedback, performance data, and business outcomes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required in Life Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, or a related field; advanced degree (PharmD, MS, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
- 3-5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical sales, medical science, clinical education, or a related field.
- Deep expertise in a specific therapeutic category, including disease biology, treatment protocols, clinical data interpretation, and the competitive landscape.
- Prior experience in pharmaceutical sales training, medical education, or as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of the patient journey and the clinical decision-making process of oncology healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific information into clear, compelling, and commercially relevant learning content.
- Strong knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design best practices.
- Experience navigating the MLR review process and ensuring compliance with pharmaceutical promotional standards.
- Proficiency in digital learning tools, LMS platforms, and virtual training technologies.
- Excellent presentation, facilitation, and communication skills with the ability to engage both scientific and commercial audiences.
- Ability to travel up to 30-50%, including field visits, sales meetings, and training events.
