About the role

The role involves leading a data science team that develops machine learning and analytics solutions for Scotts Miracle-Gro, focusing on areas such as pricing and promotion elasticities, POS and demand forecasting, category and audience insights, and models powering AI agents. The team works closely with the build and agent engine, ensuring models go directly into production.

Responsibilities

  • Frame business questions as tractable modeling problems and choose the right methods.
  • Deliver models across various families including time-series forecasting, causal and elasticity modeling, regression and classification, gradient-boosted trees, and modern ML.
  • Set the standard for evaluation by defining success metrics and golden datasets upfront and holding models accountable.
  • Use AI coding and analysis agents to automate repetitive tasks and improve cycle time.
  • Treat models as production software with reproducible pipelines, version control, testing, and clean, reviewable code.
  • Package models as services and APIs for integration into agents and applications.
  • Coach and develop the team, recruit and level talent, and prioritize work with business Product Owners and Data Engineering teams.
  • Communicate the impact and trade-offs of the team's work clearly to both technical and business audiences.

Requirements

  • Strong ML foundations, including grounding in ML algorithms and statistics.
  • Production-quality Python skills, reproducible pipelines, and proficiency in Git, testing, containers, and APIs.
  • Experience with MLOps, CI/CD, and versioning.
  • Hands-on experience operating a mature ML lifecycle at scale.
  • Confident use of AI coding and analysis tools, including LLM evaluation, RAG, embeddings, vector search, and agent workflows.
  • People leadership, including experience leading and growing a data science team.
  • Business acumen, demonstrating the ability to tie modeling work to measurable business outcomes and communicate it to non-technical leaders.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline, or equivalent applied experience.

  • Agentic fluency, confident use of AI coding and analysis tools.
  • Leadership and partnership, coaching and developing the team.
  • Business acumen, tying modeling work to measurable business outcomes.

Benefits

Starting budgeted pay range: $175,700.00 - $206,700.00 per year. Includes a 15% discount on company stock, 401K matching (up to 7.5%), and an outstanding wellness reimbursement program.
