The Sr Manager for Communications (Editorial) will oversee the day-to-day operations of the editorial team within the Communications department and collaborate with the Director on communications strategy and execution. This role requires the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, write under tight deadlines, and ensure timely completion of communications projects. The position involves handling sensitive information and interacting with executive management and media representatives.

About the role

This position has been approved for Partial Telework. If telework is approved, you are required to work within the State of California only and, if Partial Telework, must report to the main office in Orange, CA at least two (2) days per week. The role operates in a dynamic, fast-paced environment requiring excellent task management and independent problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership (45%)
    • Cultivate and promote a mission-driven culture focused on high-quality performance, customer service, consistency, dignity, and accountability.
    • Direct and assist the team in carrying out department responsibilities, collaborating with leadership to support short- and long-term goals.
    • Hire, manage, train, review, and set goals for department staff.
    • Collaborate with leaders across the organization to monitor editorial support needs and plan staff workload accordingly.
  • Program Oversight (50%)
    • Develop and implement CalOptima Health's communications plans based on research and business needs.
    • Write and edit materials for a broad range of communications tools, including newsletters, annual reports, press releases, and executive emails.
    • Ensure timely completion of Communications' projects and deliverables.
    • Implement and maintain processes to update regular communications tools and publications.
    • Set editorial department policies and desktop procedures to ensure smooth operations and accountability; seek process improvements.
    • Collaborate with the Director in developing key messages for the organization and executives.
    • Handle complex and sensitive information, including communications for the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors.
    • Build and maintain exceptional quality standards for editorial content; coach direct reports for ongoing improvement.
    • Support collaborative activities with affiliated departments, including Community Relations and Government Affairs.
  • Other (5%)
    • Complete additional projects and duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, health administration, or a related field plus 5 years of experience in managing communications, public relations, community relations, crisis communication, or media relations. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also qualify.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, health administration, or a related field.
  • Healthcare background.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to visually read information from computer screens, forms, and printed materials.
  • Clear speech for conversation and communication via telephone and in-person interactions.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, reaching, flexibility, and body movement (bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, prolonged sitting).
  • Lifting and moving objects weighing 10 to 25 pounds.
