Sr. Lead Engineer

We serve original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and independent aftermarket distributors worldwide across the mobility and industrial fields. Our solutions support light and commercial vehicles (on- and off-highway), as well as marine and industrial applications, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and power generation.
The Garrett Advancing Motion (GTX) Compression GBE develops new products for the industrial market that will have lasting impacts on our planet. We are expanding our Torrance, California team in support of launching new centrifugal compressors into production. A Sr. Lead Engineer is needed to lead the development team through accelerated industrialization. Work includes direct communication with customers and cross-functional internal teams. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing technology in the industrial market at a well-established technology company.
The successful candidate will have experience leading a team through new product launch into production and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. This person will bring experience in turbomachinery and/or electric motors that wants to help expand Garrett's centrifugal technology into the industrial market.
Responsibilities
- End to End Product Ownership, meeting all functional requirements (Performance, Reliability, Quality, Costs & Timing) to meet customer specifications
- Accountable for Internal & External APQP on full Bill Of Material
- Single Point of Contact to Customer for Launch
- Lead & Prioritize project team work to meet project objectives (Prototypes, ODT, PPAP and SOP)
- Lead team of designers and development engineers, and pull in resources from SME's
- Coordinate activities with design (2D/3D), simulation (CFD, FEA, etc.), manufacturing, and suppliers to create production viable components
- Define FMEA and execute DVP&R by preparing prototype hardware, testing, analysis, and summary
- Support development of process documents (manufacturing, lab, design, etc.) as needed to ensure lessons learned are captured
- Drive field or launch issue resolution process using root cause analysis tools, document it by appropriate way (8D, 5WHY, Ishikawa, Knowledge Card, etc …..)
- Generate VE ideas contributing to cost reduction of the product in terms of design, materials and processes
- Initiate and execute benchmarking activity related to his component & discipline
- Support the hiring process, hiring decision, on-boarding, and UCP process for your team
- Full accountability for team performance
- Lead team member performance evaluations, recognition, and support talent development
- Reports back through the GBE and the Domains any major gaps in simulation tools, knowledge gaps and product gaps to meet new performance, reliability and cost targets for future development
Requirements
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering discipline
- 7+ years of experience with developing and/or launching products into production
- Experience with direct customer interface
- Experience leading multi-skilled project teams
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills for internal and external communication in a global organization
- 10-20% travel to manufacturing and/or customer sights
- Fluent in English
- Team player, Growth, customer focus, and strong sense of urgency
Preferred Experience or Capabilities
- Experience with refrigerant or air compressor systems
- Experience with safety certification (UL, CE, etc.)
- Experience in turbomachinery, mechanical design or testing
- Experience in high speed electric motors and hydrodynamic bearings
- Experience with casting, machining, and assembly of hardware
- Experience with 3D design tools
- Six Sigma GB certification
- Eager to learn and acquire new skills, new capabilities
Pay
The salary range for this role is between $157,000 and $196,300. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience.
