Duties

Senior Laboratory Scientist duties include:

  • Performing a variety of standardized chemical tests, physical tests, and complex microbiological analyses.
  • Maintaining proper quality control/quality assurance.
  • Operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Entering data into the LIMS system.
  • Preparing bacteriological media, performing quality control procedures on media, and recommending improvements in work procedures.
  • Participating in and successfully passing proficiency testing.
  • Preparing and maintaining test data.
  • Preparing and certifying standards and other reagents.
  • Coordinating with operation's personnel to optimize plant performance.
  • Analyzing waters for presence of pathogens and other bacteria.
  • Generating applied Standard Operations Procedures for chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses.
  • Establishing and implementing procedures to assure the accuracy and completeness of data generated in the laboratory.
  • Monitoring and directing new and lower level employees' work.
  • Performing diagnostic and analytical analyses to troubleshoot situations with analytical procedures.
  • Responding to citizen/customer complaints concerning water and wastewater treatment problems.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required.
  • Maintaining job safety standards and complying with City of Shreveport vehicle safety rules.
  • Regularly attending required safety, job-related, and certification training as required.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, biology, or a closely related field, plus one (1) year experience in wastewater or water treatment laboratory or related experience.
  • Facility with form perception to recognize physical and chemical differences in materials and eye-hand coordination.
  • Possess data handling skills, including facility with Microsoft Office or similar programs, generating emails, as well as laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
  • Ability to prepare written reports and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Valid State Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Ability to become knowledgeable of quantitative laboratory analysis, including legal chain of custody and quality control.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with and direct others.
  • Amiss Plant Assignment - Hold or be able to obtain Class 4 Water Production, Water Treatment and Water Distribution Certificates issued by the State of Louisiana, Dept. of Health and Hospitals within 3 years.
