Sr Java Full Stack Developer
About the role
We’re seeking a Senior Java Full Stack Developer to a strategic cloud modernization initiative (deliverables targeted through the end of 2026). This role is focused on replatforming/migrating existing services - moving Java REST services currently deployed on-prem into AWS (EKS) - while continuing to support a modern Angular front end.
This is a backend-leaning full stack role (70% backend / 30% frontend). Pure backend candidates won’t be a fit: the team needs engineers who can flex across the stack as priorities shift and who can demonstrate real front-end experience plus strong aptitude.
Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on design, coding, testing, and support of complex enterprise applications at scale
- Help migrate and modernize Java REST services from on-prem to AWS EKS
- Build and maintain Java web services and integration layers between UI and data sources
- Contribute to the Angular front end as needed (this is not a UI-only role, but UI contribution is required)
- Work with databases including MongoDB and Aurora PostgreSQL (similar enterprise DB experience is acceptable)
- Implement and execute automated testing and quality practices (including Playwright)
- Support CI/CD, code quality, and DevOps-aligned delivery standards
- Provide production support, troubleshoot critical issues, and drive continuous improvement
- Participate in scoping/architecture conversations and mentor junior engineers as needed
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in IT/Computer Science (or additional relevant experience in lieu of degree)
- 5+ years of software engineering experience across the SDLC (requirements, design, build, test, and support)
- Full stack experience with a backend-heavy focus (70/30 backend/frontend)
- Java 17+ required (environment currently using Java 21)
- Angular 17+ required (currently on Angular 18, targeting newer versions)
- AWS is a hard requirement, including multiple years deploying and managing EKS
- Experience migrating/replatforming services from on-prem to AWS
- Strong experience with modern engineering practices: CI/CD, automated testing, agile delivery, and code quality standards
Nice to Have
- AWS certifications (especially AWS Developer or AWS Solutions Architect) — “highly preferable”
- Experience with AWS AI/coding assistants (e.g., Amazon Q, Kiro) and an AI-first engineering mindset
Pay and Schedule
This is a contract position with a schedule of 40 hours/week, paying USD $97.00/hr (W2). The role is hybrid, with 90% remote work and 4 to 6 onsite meetings per year in Reston, VA (20190).
