About the role

The Sr. Investment Accountant performs accounting and reporting for investments as part of the Close and Analysis team within the Investment Center of Excellence (COE). This role supports the monthly accounting close, reconciliations, and control execution for the Company’s investment portfolio, with a focus on mortgages. The ideal candidate will collaborate across teams, challenge existing processes, and drive efficiencies while possessing Statutory and GAAP accounting knowledge for residential and commercial mortgage loan investments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform timely GAAP/Stat basis reconciliations for investment and investment-related accounts (e.g., suspense, accounts payable/receivable) between subledger and general ledger, including researching and resolving variances to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare manual journal entries and extract general ledger details from Oracle on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Analyze and interpret investment data to explain variances and fluctuations.
  • Manage high volumes of investment-related financial data and transactions with exceptional organizational skills, ensuring accuracy and ownership of assigned processes from inception to completion.
  • Perform monthly close tasks and procedures to ensure timely and accurate Clearwater monthly close, proactively communicating and resolving issues with the Clearwater team.
  • Assist in coordinating external and internal audit requests.
  • Proactively plan for contingencies and identify, propose, and implement process improvements.
  • Support internal control objectives through risk identification, control execution, documentation, and gap remediation.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on assigned duties, providing insight to management for effective decision-making and operational efficiency.
  • Assist in the accounting and reporting for insurance company general account and separate account mortgage loan investments, including support for Statutory report preparation.
  • Collaborate with third-party accounting administrators and asset managers to research and resolve variances and reconciling items.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, or subject matter expertise to others, though formal supervisory responsibilities are not included.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or other relevant field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience, or a combination of experience with a professional designation (CPA, CFA, CIA, CISA, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of current processes and workflows.
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements, internal control enhancements, automation, and efficiencies.
  • Proficiency in independently learning financial systems with provided tools and coaching.
  • Ability to brainstorm, research, and propose solutions to ad-hoc questions from business partners.
  • Strong analytical skills to challenge outcomes against expected results.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of management, including executive leadership.
  • Strong consultation and change management skills to support partnerships with key groups and individuals.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clearwater experience.
  • Insurance industry experience (Life, annuity, reinsurance).
  • Professional designation in a related field (CPA, CFA, CIA, CISA, etc.).

Other Requirements

  • Primarily sedentary work involving long periods of sitting, regular computer use, and occasional standing or walking; reasonable accommodations available.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
