About the Role
As a lead designer, you will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers, ensuring the total delivery of electrical and instrumentation deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role involves advanced design work, project controls, and mentoring less experienced staff, performed under general supervision.
Responsibilities
- Utilize department design and drafting standards.
- Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria.
- Produce installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans with minimal supervision.
- Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
- Provide on-site assistance during startup.
- Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
- Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
- Report the current status of project work, including delays or improvements in projected finish dates.
- Produce equipment specifications (480VAC, 15kV/5kV) and electrical installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
- Lead and coordinate design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Mentor subordinates and participate in team or cross-discipline checks for coordination and accuracy.
- Check calculations made by other designers for accuracy, code conformance, and good engineering practice.
- Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
- Delegate work to designers based on their skills and experience, ensuring efficient progress and quality.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines and confer with clients on technical matters and scopes of work.
- Participate in planning training programs and professional development opportunities for staff.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting.
- 12 or more years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.
Skills
- Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Ability to perform lighting level calculations, size wire/conduit/overcurrent protection, and perform voltage drop calculations.
- Proficiency in routing conduit and cable tray, calculating tray and conduit fill, and determining motor control center and load center unit substation loading.
- Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
- Ability to create accurate electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
- Knowledge of workflow/information flow between disciplines and schedule constraints for electrical deliverables.
- Ability to estimate task completion, develop equipment specifications (480VAC, 15kV/5kV), and produce power system equipment/installation techniques.
- Ability to develop construction cost estimates, engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for projects.
- Experience in developing design criteria, scope of work, staffing plans, and forecasting hours for professional services.
- Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
- Programming experience with PLC, HMI, and/or DCS equipment (optional).
- Ability to lead small teams, coordinate with process groups for efficient layouts, and deliver presentations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, 2D AutoCAD, and Microstation (3D AutoCAD preferred).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, virtual team skills, and cross-divisional collaboration.
