The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. If hired, your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. About the role

Coordinates, inspects and assists with the construction of water distribution and sewer collection system components in accordance with approved construction and engineering specifications, policies and practices of the Company and the City. Utilizes expertise in construction field management, quality assurance, quality control, and report documentation. Occasionally serves as primary field contact between the Manager of Maintenance and General Contractors for water and wastewater utilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs field inspections of the construction and maintenance of water distribution system and sewer collection facilities.
  • Inspects and approves construction and installation of smaller water and wastewater facilities; communicates deficiencies to proper persons.
  • Utilizes testing procedures, inspection protocols, construction inspection techniques, and performs QA/QC functions.
  • Interprets and/or recognizes possible conflicts with other underground facilities and/or utilities.
  • Works with contractors to schedule utility outages in accordance with AW contract terms and customer requirements; coordinates contractor’s activities.
  • Participates in construction meetings and provides information on schedule compliance, change orders, and coordination.
  • Coordinates between Maintenance Manager and engineering personnel and outside construction firms to maintain standards.
  • Interacts and coordinates with customers and the public regarding construction activities.
  • Performs all functions of the position in a safe and conscientious manner, with constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public; follows Company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Policies and wears proper personal protective equipment.
  • Compiles information and prepares construction reports; reviews as-built drawings as required.
  • Assists in obtaining, preparing, and maintaining reports, permits, maps, charts, or records related to construction.
  • Assists Geographical Information System “GIS” department, as needed, to gather asset locations while utilizing GIS equipment to ensure accuracy.
  • Performs other related functions assigned or as they become apparent or as management assigns.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) with five (5) years’ experience in water distribution and construction of water distribution systems.
  • Inspection experience in water and wastewater industry (5 years minimum).
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license with acceptable driving record.

Qualifications

  • Some knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a water and wastewater facility setting.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, standards, and regulations relating to construction, inspection, and safety; considerable knowledge of inspection methods.
  • Broad knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, their construction, maintenance, testing, and disinfection.
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings, cut sheets, and stake outs.
  • Experience with construction inspections of water and wastewater facilities or large infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans, specifications, and contract documents; skill in applying material testing procedures.
  • Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain inspection field and office data, reports, and systems.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, percent, and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information orally and in writing in a professional manner to contractors, employees, consultants, and other governmental agency representatives.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively using English.

Preferred Certifications/Licenses

  • Industry-related certifications, training, technical associate degree, or Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • C-1 wastewater collection license or W-1 water distribution license (or ability to obtain within 12 months).

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 3:30pm

Work Environment

  • 80% Field; 20% Office
  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to extreme heat and/or cold
  • Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud
  • 5% travel
