Sr Industrial Design Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering

About the role

Amazon is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of innovative solutions in our world-class fulfillment centers and logistics systems. This role involves taking ownership of solving complex industry problems, designing and implementing groundbreaking solutions for automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. You will work in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment, leveraging strong technical problem-solving and project management skills.

The Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Lifecycle Management Team ensures the success of First and Middle Mile operations pre- and post-go-live. This role focuses on quality assurance and control, supporting the entire lifecycle of MHE installations, including site qualification, final acceptance, project closeout, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This position requires up to 50% travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Responsibilities

• Drive the technical strategy for a material handling equipment lifecycle organization in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers.
• Provide program leadership and technological integration across multiple teams of engineers, serving as the single-threaded leader between engineering teams, operations, and RME partners.
• Lead cross-functional communications and strategic planning for material technological deployment, introduce new tech products, determine KPIs, and drive standardization initiatives.
• Manage multiple large, highly complex programs, solely responsible for driving them through the development and deployment lifecycle.
• Deeply understand business and technical requirements of product integration from mechanical, electrical, and controls functions.
• Critique and debate tech design, judge technical viability of products/solutions, and tailor communication for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Work with Operations, Engineering, and Data Science Leadership teams to manage organizational strategy and project priority, ensuring resources are focused on the most impactful projects.
• Define program/project scope and technical/business requirements, relaying them concisely to design, firm, and field engineering teams.
• Evaluate solutions effectively and make decisions balancing business value and technology risk.
• Help customers and engineering teams make appropriate trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput expectations, quality requirements, efficiency, maintainability, and operability.
• Identify standards and drive consistent application of engineering changes across North America.
• Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center (FC) leadership and operations teams, including Industrial Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Process Engineering stakeholders.
• Communicate and present program status to Directors of Engineering and Operations.
• Data mine and transform raw thoughts into clear technical documentation.
• Travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience in design/innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related work.
• 5+ years of project management experience, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, and critical path management.
• Strong technical background in automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
• Experience prioritizing and delivering projects on time in a fast-moving environment.
• Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partnering with people at all levels within an organization.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
• Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions, evaluate outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
• Experience in ownership of projects, communicating timelines, and executing independently.
• Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics/process improvements.
• Proficiency in business or technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
• Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision-making.
• Experience designing or implementing integrated automation solutions such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
• Experience driving execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams in support of business goals.
• Six-Sigma or equivalent certification.

Pay

The base salary range for this position varies by location:

• San Francisco, CA: $152,000 - $205,600 USD annually.
• Boston, MA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• New York, NY: $145,300 - $196,600 USD annually.
• Nashville, TN: $125,500 - $169,800 USD annually.
• Austin, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Houston, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Irving, TX: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Arlington, VA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.
• Bellevue, WA: $132,100 - $178,800 USD annually.

Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
