Sr Industrial Design Engineer, GES NA Ops Engineering
About the role
Amazon is searching for an innovative and solutions-oriented Industrial Design Engineer (IDE) to lead the cross-functional design and deployment of innovative solutions in our world-class fulfillment centers and logistics systems. This role involves solving complex industry problems, designing and implementing groundbreaking solutions for automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high-speed manufacturing. You will work in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment, leveraging strong technical problem-solving and project management skills.
This role requires up to 50% travel and availability to work from a corporate office when not traveling. Candidates should either live near or be willing to relocate within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. Relocation assistance may be provided.
Responsibilities
- Drive the technical strategy for a material handling equipment lifecycle organization in partnership with WWDE, Operations Engineering, and strategic suppliers.
- Provide program leadership and technological integration across multiple teams of engineers, serving as the single-threaded leader between engineering teams, operations, and RME partners.
- Lead cross-functional communications and strategic planning for material technological deployment, introduce new tech products, determine KPIs, and drive standardization initiatives.
- Manage multiple large, highly complex programs, solely responsible for driving them through the development and deployment lifecycle.
- Understand business and technical requirements of product integration from mechanical, electrical, and controls functions, and tailor communication for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Work with Operations, Engineering, and Data Science Leadership teams to manage organizational strategy and project priority, ensuring resources focus on the most impactful projects.
- Define program/project scope and technical/business requirements, and relay them concisely to design, firm, and field engineering teams.
- Evaluate solutions effectively and make decisions balancing business value and technology risk.
- Help teams make appropriate trade-offs by considering business goals, throughput expectations, quality requirements, efficiency, maintainability, and operability.
- Identify standards and drive consistent application of engineering changes across North America.
- Build strong working relationships with Fulfillment Center (FC) leadership and operations teams, including Industrial Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, and Process Engineering stakeholders.
- Communicate and present program status to Directors of Engineering and Operations.
- Data mine and transform raw thoughts into clear technical documentation.
- Travel up to 50% to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
- 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience.
- Experience in Design/Innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related work.
- Strong technical background in relevant fields of automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
- Experience prioritizing and delivering projects on time in a fast-moving environment.
- Experience working effectively across cross-functional teams and partnering well with people at all levels within an organization.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, with a passion for delivering exceptional service.
- Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Experience using data and metrics to back up assumptions, evaluate outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
- Experience in ownership of projects, communicating timelines, and executing independently.
- Experience using Lean Process Improvement, Six Sigma methodologies, or related performance metrics/process improvements.
- Experience using business or technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or above in engineering or equivalent.
- Knowledge of concepts like system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, system analysis, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision making.
- Experience designing or implementing integrated automation solutions such as material handling systems, high-speed packaging lines, or manufacturing lines.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
- Prior success in driving execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams in support of business goals.
- Six-Sigma or equivalent certification.

The Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Lifecycle Management Team ensures the success of First and Middle Mile operations pre and post Go-Live. This team provides comprehensive support throughout the entire lifecycle of MHE installations, focusing on site qualification, Final Acceptance, Project Closeout, and continuous improvement initiatives.
