About the role

The Radiation Safety Office (RSOf) in the Office of Research supports both research and clinical uses of radioactive materials and radiation generating equipment for the University and affiliate partners. The RSOf is seeking a Senior Health Physics Technician to join their team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties of the Staff Health Physics Technician 2.
  • Cookout and prepare radioactive materials for shipment or disposal.
  • Calibrate survey equipment and assist in the maintenance of other radiation safety equipment.
  • Inspect and check sealed radioactive sources for leakage; inventory sealed sources.
  • Instruct radiation safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and practices.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate effectively with a variety of individuals internal and external to the department.
  • Ability to consistently produce high-quality, accurate work and records free from errors.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Additional Essential Functions

  • Staff Health Physics Tech 2-U Receive, survey, record and distribute radioactive material packages as instructed by supervisor.
  • Absorb and distribute radioactive waste in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Survey laboratory for radioactive contamination and violations of the University of Cincinnati Radiation control and Safety Program.
  • Provide radiation safety assistance to hospitals as directed.
  • Maintain inventory of radioactive materials and other records.
  • Calibrate survey equipment under direct supervision.
  • Keep the Assistant Radiation Safety Office of Radiation Safety Officer informed of any violations of government regulations or University Radiation Safety policy.
  • Act as first responder for the Radiation Safety Office.
  • Instruct Radiation Safety personnel and others as necessary on radiation safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Radiation Safety Office and/or Assistant Radiation Safety Officer.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Physical or Biological Science.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Trainings/Certifications

  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a valid HAZMAT Commercial Driver’s License within three (3) months of employment.

Experience

  • Three (3) years related experience.

Qualifications

  • Considered Experience with radiation generating equipment (x-rays) and general knowledge of relevant state and/or federal regulations.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to bend, reach, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.
