Sr. Estimator

About the role

This position will lead large conceptual EPC bids where experience plays a vital role in developing accurate estimates. The Senior Estimator will report to the Estimating Manager and provide leadership and coordination within their assigned industry or market. Responsibilities include managing RFP requirements, developing winning proposal strategies, exploring alternate contracting strategies, and managing risk. Preference for candidates living in the Denver, CO area or Vancouver, WA region. This role can be hybrid or remote, with up to 30% travel required.

Responsibilities

• Listen to directions and suggestions from supervisors regarding safe and proper work practices, evaluate that information, and implement a plan for carrying out duties.
• Be motivated and work productively while adhering to company policies and procedures.
• Develop a complete understanding of applicable company policies and procedures to plan and execute assigned work.
• Examine and inspect office conditions and procedures to identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures.
• Manage, inspect, and review the work of direct reports for accuracy and compliance with company policies, providing corrective action as needed.
• Responsible for hiring, firing, performance appraisals, and pay reviews for direct reports.
• Produce quality work meeting company policies, procedures, and industry standards.
• Identify workplace hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or minimize them.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices.
• Provide leadership, coordination, and guidance to other Estimators (I, II, & III) in their assigned industry or market.
• Lead strategic initiatives related to company, department, or industry/market-specific improvements.
• Manage available bid time to ensure accurate and timely preparation of complete estimates.
• Function as a team player and create an environment where collaboration is encouraged.
• Perform complete conceptual estimates for large, complex EPC projects, including site visits, scope determination, material take-offs (MTO), inputting data into computerized estimating systems, and addressing questions to Owner/Engineer.
• Utilize experience to conceptualize portions of the estimate, organizing and detailing it for proper man-hour application and efficient turnover to field personnel.
• Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and ethical behavior when representing the company to clients, engineers, vendors, or competitors.
• Carry out the spirit and intent of the company’s beliefs through daily practice.
• Perform entire conceptual estimates for large EPC, design-build, general construction, and joint venture projects from bid receipt through proposal submission.
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of all aspects of construction estimating and consistently manage bid teams for large, complex projects.
• Train other employees in the estimating department.
• Master technical estimating responsibilities, including:
  • Site visits and jobsite exposure
  • Scope determination
  • Input into estimating software
  • Understanding RFQ requirements
  • Questions to owner/engineer
  • Written clarifications to owner/engineer/estimators
  • Turnover of bid estimate to the field
• Master discipline-specific responsibilities, including:
  • Material Take-Offs (MTO)
  • Comprehension of drawings and specifications
  • Man-hour analysis
  • Understanding of material pricing
  • Understanding of subcontracts
  • Understanding of strategies and variables
  • Understanding range of man-hours
  • Providing field assistance
  • Standard coding support
• When designated as the Lead Estimator, additional responsibilities include:
  • Supervising and outlining tasks for all bid team members, providing adequate information, and establishing a bidding schedule with deadlines.
  • Ensuring successful kick-off meetings, mid-bid reviews, and final reviews, involving the Regional VP of Operations when available.
  • Reviewing and understanding owner-provided specifications and documentation to ensure all needed costs are incorporated into the estimate.
  • Performing final reviews at least two days before the bid due date.
  • Reviewing all work performed by team members.
  • Critically analyzing each aspect of the estimate to ensure competitiveness, applying appropriate labor rates and construction methods based on site conditions.
  • Exploring options to shorten construction schedules and minimize indirect and construction equipment costs.
  • Recognizing risks and applying contingency and escalation when appropriate.
  • Knowing when and how to capitalize on opportunities.
• Manage, lead, and mentor direct reports, including Estimators I, II, and III.

Requirements

• High school diploma plus related training or education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of 10 years of construction estimating experience.
• Must have heavy industrial experience, with preference for experience estimating gas-fired power generation projects.
• Knowledge of construction techniques, estimating, and construction management.
• Knowledge of various contract types, including EPC, DB, and JV.
• Experience in contract negotiations.
• Experience working with a variety of vendors and clients.
• Experience leading bids on a regular basis.
• Knowledge of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
• Actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors when on-site, setting a personal example of safe behavior.

Pay

$140,000 - $180,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
