Sr Engineer I, Process, Borger Refinery

About the role

The Sr Process Engineer uses technical expertise to achieve operational and project objectives by designing, implementing, controlling, and optimizing new and existing processes in Phillips 66 refineries. This role partners with internal and external stakeholders to build technically sound strategies around business improvement opportunities, safety enhancements, sustainability, cost reduction, and profitability maximization.

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally and heavy sour crude oil from Canada, delivered by pipeline. Products include transportation fuels, petroleum coke, NGLs, and solvents, distributed via pipelines to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and the Midcontinent region.

Responsibilities

• Design engineering solutions and validation processes to meet design briefs (e.g., functionality, performance, aesthetics, cost) while conforming to organizational and regulatory standards.
• Analyze information to specify methods, process steps, plant, machinery, and equipment required to design and improve manufacturing or materials processes, ensuring cost and quality parameters are met.
• Manage technical troubleshooting projects and process operations, diagnosing technical issues with equipment and experiments and developing effective solutions.
• Conduct research using primary data sources to analyze key themes and trends, including yields and reliability metrics.
• Participate in Process Safety Management (PSM) activities such as Management of Change (MOC), Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to support refinery goals.
• Maintain key process safety information, including P&IDs, PFDs, and Heat and Material Balances.
• Provide process and technical support for major turnarounds, maintenance projects, and unit shutdowns/startups on a shift schedule.
• Demonstrate visible commitment to workplace safety and health for employees and contractors.

Requirements

• Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an engineering discipline.
• 3 or more years of engineering experience within the energy industry.
• Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
  • Travel up to 5%.
  • Work extended hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call duties.
  • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet.
  • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, chemicals, hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions.
  • Wear fire-retardant clothing and personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean-shaven face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
• 7 or more months of supervisory or mentoring experience.
• 3 or more years of experience with process simulation software (e.g., HYSYS, Pro II, AspenPlus).
• 5 or more years of experience working as a Process Engineer at a refinery.

Pay

This position has a base salary range of $141,300 - $172,700. Offers are determined based on candidate experience, skills, and alignment with role requirements, ensuring internal equity and market competitiveness.
