Sr Engineer - Components & New Product
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Engineer to lead the design, development, analysis, testing, and commercialization of telecommunications components, mounting systems, and new products. This role combines structural/mechanical engineering, product development, FEA, manufacturing, and customer‑focused engineering to deliver innovative, reliable, manufacturable, and cost‑effective solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead new product development and documentation from concept through design, prototyping, testing, validation, packaging and production release.
- Design telecommunications components, mounts, brackets, frames, platforms, and structural assemblies such as antenna mounts, equipment brackets, pole mounts, sector frames, rooftop and wall mounts, small‑cell products, and custom hardware.
- Perform structural/mechanical analysis for wind, ice, seismic, equipment, dead, live, and other applicable loads; evaluate load paths, capacity, deflection, stability, materials, and bolted/welded connections.
- Conduct and lead FEA and other analysis methods for design optimization and failure investigations.
- Develop CAD models, production drawings, BOMs, calculations, specifications, and test plans.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Sourcing, Sales, Operations, vendors, and field teams to implement software enhancements and drive efficiencies throughout the product development process.
- Partner with Manufacturing to optimize welding, forming, machining, cutting, coating, assembly, tooling, and fixtures.
- Identify opportunities to reduce cost, material usage, part count, production time, and assembly complexity.
- Lead prototype development, testing, validation, and design reviews.
- Perform root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions for quality, manufacturing, customer, and field issues.
- Support quotations, customized products, customer inquiries, and technical sales activities.
- Manage design and documentation for packaging requirements, working with drafting, inventory, shipping, internal groups, and vendors.
- Develop engineering standards, procedures, design guides, and product documentation.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support to other engineers.
- Stay current with telecom technologies, engineering standards, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Travel to customer and vendor locations as needed (approximately 10% travel).
Requirements
- Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, structural, manufacturing engineering, or a related field. PE license or active pursuit of PE licensure preferred. Willingness to obtain additional state licenses as required.
- Experience: 5+ years of engineering experience in product development, structural/mechanical engineering, components, or manufacturing. Proven track record taking products from concept through production. Experience designing structural components, mounts, brackets, or assemblies; working with structural steel, aluminum, sheet metal, or tubular products. Proficiency with FEA, prototyping, testing, validation, and failure analysis. Experience with DFM/DFA and manufacturing processes. Telecommunications, wireless infrastructure, small‑cell, or outdoor equipment experience strongly preferred; customer‑facing or technical support experience a plus.
- Skills & Abilities: Strong technical leadership, mentoring, and project management capabilities. Deep understanding of structural/mechanical engineering, load paths, materials, stability, and product performance. Knowledge of bolted, welded, and mechanical connection design. Proficiency with SolidWorks (required); AutoCAD or other 3D CAD software a plus. Experience with FEA and structural/mechanical analysis software. Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, tolerances, and assembly. Ability to balance performance, manufacturability, quality, and cost. Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and collaborate across cross‑functional teams. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship.
Physical Requirements
- Primarily office‑based work with occasional travel to customer and vendor locations.
- Use hand tools for light assembly/modification of test and prototype articles.
- Regular computer, phone, and general office equipment use.
- Frequent hand use, finger dexterity, and ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to concentrate on tasks for long periods and observe information from multiple sources.
- Lift and/or move up to 10 lb regularly; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lb.
- Distant vision: 20/40 corrected or uncorrected bilaterally.
