Responsibilities
- Provides civil engineering expertise to develop substation/civil plans for sitework including grading, off-site improvements, drainage facilities, fencing and block walls, and landscaping.
- Completes calculations and prepares designs for substation steel structures, foundations, and control enclosures.
- Provides civil engineering expertise to transmission line engineering analysis, route analysis and selection, calculations for line design (includes structure loading, foundation design and conductor sag).
- Specifies materials and evaluates bid documents and technical submittals, and completes the construction package.
- Acquires all necessary construction approvals and permits from the authority having jurisdiction.
- Selects and widely applies engineering principles, theories and concepts in the design of transmission and substation civil projects.
- Independently scopes, routes, and sites substation and transmission line projects and evaluates alternatives in order to find best value.
- Mentors, leads, trains and directs fellow staff members, and provides technical design and project peer review.
- Provides accurate cost estimates and schedule input for use in company budgeting procedures such that cash flow requirements are identified.
- Evaluates, benchmarks, and makes recommendations for the creation and improvements of substation and transmission standards and specifications.
- Performs studies, prepares and provides written and oral reports to management and internal and external customers.
- Collaborates with internal and external customers and stakeholders to ensure a successful project.
- Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company.
- Performs all work independently with oversight at key junctions of the project.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education and Work Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited school and 5 years industry experience as a practicing engineer, or 8+ years as a practicing engineer if no PE license.
- Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of utility settings with specific experience in civil, structural, and/or transmission engineering design. Civil experience of substation/switchyard site development or related design. Structural experience involving substation steel design or transmission pole design for projects up to 230kV. Transmission line design experience including overhead line design up to 230kV or underground line design up to 230kV. Skills such as analytical, interpersonal, and communication.
- Equipment and Applications: Familiarity with PCs, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and software for structural steel design, foundation design, transmission line design, hydrology and hydraulics.
About the Role
- Performs comprehensive civil/structural engineering design services for substation and/or transmission facilities.
- Ensures projects are constructed on schedule and within committed resource allocations.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- General office environment.
- Travel may be required up to 25% of work hours and may consist of travel to remote parts of Nevada in order to scope substation sites or transmission alignments and support design and construction.
- Walking over rugged terrain at high elevation may be required.
