Sr. Energy Strategy Manager, AWS Energy Team

Amazon Web Services (AWS) · Austin, TX · 1 wk ago
ManagementFull-time

About the role

Amazon is seeking a self-starter to join the AWS Energy team in pioneering the future for data center utility power by developing and executing the strategy by which AWS delivers energy projects and partners with electric utilities and energy companies across the Americas. This individual will define the end-to-end (generation, transmission, distribution, backup power) power strategy for scaling and operating AWS’ diverse, low-cost energy supply.

In this role, you will manage multiple, large-scale and technically complex power infrastructure projects across multiple geographies by facilitating close collaboration between both internal and external stakeholders. You will explore and discover new supply opportunities that deliver both near-term capacity and an accelerated path to net-zero carbon supply, converting them into tactically sound and executable energy projects while working to reduce energy capital and operating expenses.

Internally, you will report status, risks, mitigations, and successes to C-level and VP-level leadership, as well as influence multiple cross-functional partner teams in the overall data center capacity delivery business process. Externally, you will manage utility interactions, coordinate efforts between real estate, engineering, and planning teams in site evaluation, project engineering, scheduling, and budgeting, including influencing and contracting with utilities, EPC, and/or Owner’s Engineers to meet AWS’ needs.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong energy background and a proven track record of developing and delivering innovative energy projects. Experience working with regulated electric utilities to develop, contract, and deliver medium and high-voltage power infrastructure, including related tariffs and supply agreements, is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive utilities strategy for AWS data centers in the Americas.
  • Manage multiple utilities, EPC, and Owner’s Engineers to deliver medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) power infrastructure, including negotiations and contracting.
  • Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, high-voltage substations, energy storage, etc.) to reduce long-term energy costs.
  • Manage capital budgets for electrical infrastructure and energy projects.
  • Collaborate with Amazon’s Clean Energy and Renewable Energy (CFE/RE) team to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
  • Execute electricity supply contracts that create new clean energy capacity on the grid (through utilities), reduce cost, minimize risk, and leverage opportunities that benefit Amazon.
  • Manage a portfolio of complex energy projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and regulated utilities on the implementation and management of energy projects to meet business timelines.
  • Identify and develop innovative cost-saving projects (capital and operational) and initiatives related to energy infrastructure and supply.
  • Complete due diligence on in-market opportunities and develop them into cost savings for the business.
  • Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in Engineering, Business, or another technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience working in the utility/energy industry in a commercial, business development, or technical role.
  • 3+ years of power transaction or contracting experience in U.S. energy markets (e.g., PJM & MISO), including financial modeling, rate analysis, and negotiation of interconnection agreements and related contracts with utilities and contractors.
  • 2+ years of experience managing multiple million-dollar power infrastructure contracts with external stakeholders to drive projects to completion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree (MBA) preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience planning, engineering, developing, or constructing substations or other 34.5kV+ energy infrastructure.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing innovative infrastructure and operational strategies within the energy sector, such as energy storage, demand response, or fuel cells.
  • Experience working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
  • Experience with IT infrastructure, data centers, and cloud services.
