Sr. Director, Applications Engineering - Commerce

About the role

As an Application Engineering Leader for Digital Technology Services (DTS), you will transform Docusign’s business technology landscape through next-generation software and AI solutions at scale. This leadership role reports to the Vice President of Application Engineering and is fully accountable for defining the technical vision, strategy, and talent as Docusign accelerates its global expansion through Intelligent Agreement Management.

Responsibilities

• Lead and own a portfolio of future-state, scaled, secure technology solutions aligned with Docusign’s global standards and business objectives.
• Define strategy, architecture, design, and development of modern Commerce and CPQ platforms.
• Design and deliver always-on, high-performance platforms and services powering core business applications, with deep expertise in cloud-native, modern web, and backend technologies.
• Drive technology innovation with data- and insights-driven transformation of process workflows and persona experiences.
• Infuse technology solutions with agentic experiences powered by AI/ML, practicing an AI-first mindset in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
• Define and champion an evolutionary roadmap for a unified, scalable integration architecture that breaks down system silos and unlocks time-to-value.
• Accelerate the organization’s ability to execute digital transformation initiatives at speed and enterprise scale.
• Own Engineering Excellence by architecting a sustainable framework of technical best practices and standards to ensure technical rigor, reliability, and accelerated delivery quality.
• Nurture experimental AI prototypes and scale them to a production-hardened, agentic enterprise ecosystem.
• Lead and develop the team to translate business requirements into a scalable agentic development roadmap.
• Shape and define global architecture and security standards for autonomous multi-agent frameworks (CrewAI, LangGraph) to ensure secure, deterministic execution in enterprise environments.
• Upskill the broader Application Engineering organization, transforming a traditional development workforce into an AI-fluent engineering team.
• Influence senior leaders, stakeholders, and motivate large, diverse teams with effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Conduct technology research and development, proof-of-concept, and experimentation of emerging technology trends and security standards for DTS adoption to deliver business outcomes.
• Manage and optimize spend, resources, and total cost to serve across engineering platforms.
• Lead engagements with platform vendors to influence their roadmap, SLA, and performance adherence.
• Lead high-performing engineering teams capable of end-to-end AI agentic full-stack product design, delivery, and support, working closely with Application Product Management, Platform Engineering, Data Engineering, Release, Quality, Security, and DevOps.
• Hire and develop high-caliber talent to strengthen team technology expertise and innovation.

Requirements

• BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related field.
• 15+ years of experience leading world-class product and engineering teams at global scale.
• Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.

Skills

• Strong understanding of business domain and applications landscape.
• Experience leading high-performing Application Engineering organizations responsible for delivering global, large-scale, enterprise-quality solutions.
• Deep domain knowledge in Commerce, CPQ, and Marketing platform design and development.
• Deep expertise in modern frontend and backend technologies (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, Node.js, Java, Python), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and microservices architecture.
• Hands-on design and build of autonomous multi-agent frameworks (e.g., CrewAI, LangGraph) and scalable agentic platforms, RAG architecture, LLMs, focusing on distributed system architecture and secure execution environments.
• Lead Technical Feasibility Studies and rapid prototyping to provide the engineering foundation for "build vs. buy" architectural decisions.
• Hands-on Applied Research & Prototyping to conduct AI research and translate theoretical GenAI advancements into production-ready software features.
• Strong background in DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills, strategic mindset, and a passion for delivering business value through technology.
• Experience managing day-to-day operations of large engineering organizations.

Schedule

Hybrid: Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required (minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will include a weekly in-office expectation).

Pay

Pay for this position is based on geographic location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Based on applicable legislation, the pay range in California is $284,400.00 - $423,475.00 base salary.

This role is also eligible for the following bonuses:

• Sales personnel: variable incentive pay dependent on achievement of pre-established sales goals.
• Non-Sales roles: company bonus plan calculated as a percentage of eligible wages and dependent on company performance.
• Stock: eligible to receive Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
