Sr. Diagnostic Technician

About the role

The Clinical Technician provides technical support and patient care services in the Department of Ophthalmology, performing a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Technician Supervisor and Clinical Manager.

Responsibilities

• Patient Screening and Preliminary Testing
• Seeks clinical input when appropriate.
• Performs prescreening: reviews and records patient demographics and prepares electronic patient records for physician review.
• Performs visual assessment and refractive assessment as per physician requirements.
• Performs tonometry/pachymetry as indicated.
• Assists physicians and optometrists in patient care.
• Compiles and documents all paperwork for pre-operative examinations.
• Administers and documents ophthalmic medication drops.
• Ensures physician orders are followed and testing results are reconciled.
• Complex Diagnostic Testing
• Performs advanced diagnostic tests as required.
• Cleans and maintains advanced diagnostic instrumentation.
• Maintains calibration of diagnostic instrumentation.
• Quality & Performance Improvement
• Participates in team-building activities.
• Improves procedures and administrative systems.
• Participates in performance improvement projects and customer service initiatives.
• Familiarizes new employees with clinical functions, policies, and procedures.
• Maintains and monitors HIPAA compliance.
• Reports non-working equipment to supervisor.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5+ years' experience in clinical ophthalmology.
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA®) plus Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA) or Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist (ROUB).
• Advanced knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, and terminology.
• Demonstrated experience in patient instruction/education.
• Demonstrated ability in caring for and directing the blind or partially sighted patient.
• Demonstrated experience in ophthalmic instrumentation cleaning and maintenance.
• Demonstrated experience in minor surgical assisting and surgical setup.
• Ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours/day.
• Good communication and organizational skills, professionalism, and motivation.
• Experience in JCAHO compliance.
• Ability to respond to patient emergencies.
