Sr Database Administrator
About the role
The Senior Database Administrator provides strategic enterprise direction for database implementations, including performance and load balancing. This role maintains current database management systems, troubleshoots issues, designs new databases, ensures database availability and data integrity, implements database changes, manages security, and provides 24/7 on-call support. The position assists the Sr. Data Engineer in supporting and administering the enterprise Data Warehouse (DW), including expansion to new business units and operational processes, and supports resource managers across the Product Innovation group with internal development applications and products.
Responsibilities
- Assess and develop long-term strategic goals for production, development, and staging Database Management Systems.
- Train and guide other database administrators (II and I).
- Manage Database Administrator resources by assigning tasks and projects to other DBAs.
- Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
- Optimize and allocate physical data storage for database systems.
- Work with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
- Make decisions and recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards to support procurement and development efforts.
- Create models for new database development and changes to existing ones.
- Respond to and resolve database access, performance, and other general issues.
- Design, develop, and implement high availability and redundant systems; policies and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
- Participate in establishing appropriate end-user database access control levels.
- Develop routines for end users to facilitate best practices database use.
- Perform database transactions and security audits.
- Oversee technical activities of other Database Administrator(s) within the organization.
- Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems (or related, relevant, and/or direct experience considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements).
- Minimum of seven (7) years of day-to-day database technical support experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience in large database environments, including Teradata (highly preferred).
Skills
- Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
- Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring, and supporting database servers.
- Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with data processing flowcharting techniques.
- Project management experience.
- Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
- Hands-on experience with advanced MS SQL Server management.
- Advanced understanding of database virtualization, performance, and load balancing.
- Hands-on development experience with SSIS, writing stored procedures, functions, and views (preferred).
- Relevant experience with front-end reporting software and visualization tools such as SSRS, SAS, Tableau, etc. (preferred).
- Experience demonstrating the utmost discretion and confidentiality, with access to private information.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Licenses & Certifications
At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Primary work environment is a climate-controlled office setting.
- Work requires travel to attend meetings, trade shows, and conferences.
- May be required to work evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
- Strength sufficient to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, and/or move up to 40 pounds occasionally.
- Sedentary work: involves sitting most of the time.
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (e.g., calculator, copy machine, computer printer).
- Physical activities include balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

- Visual acuity required for preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, expansive reading, and visual inspection of employees, visitors, or facility.
- Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, and enter, exit, and operate a motor vehicle for travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows, and San Manuel properties.
- Endurance sufficient to sit, walk, and stand for extended periods and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.
