Sr. Data Scientist

About the role

Ecopetrol S.A. is seeking an ECP Permian Sr. AI & Data Scientist to join their team in Houston, Texas. This role will focus on developing advanced analytics and machine learning models to identify key drivers of productivity within large, complex datasets. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive data-driven insights and optimize field development plans.

Responsibilities

• Develop advanced analytics and machine learning models to identify key drivers of productivity
• Lead and transfer knowledge in data-driven subsurface evaluation, integrating physical characterization with advanced diagnostics (e.g., RTA, simulation) to reduce forecast uncertainty
• Oversee NoviLabs machine learning–driven development optimization projects
• Collaborate with ECP Permian team leads, managers, and staff to gather and validate critical technical data inputs
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve data quality and integration issues
• Design and implement integrated data pipelines and automated workflows across databases
• Support optimization of field development plans through data-driven insights
• Quantify and communicate uncertainty in EUR estimates within analytics workflows
• Build, enhance, and steward data management tools and processes

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering, Earth Science, or related field required
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry required
• Advanced working knowledge of statistics, machine learning & multivariate techniques required
• Knowledge of third-party data source systems (e.g. Enverus) required
• Prior experience in data analytics and dealing with large data sets preferred
• Proficiency with SME data delivery & software platforms preferred
• Excellent MS Excel skills & Spotfire expertise preferred
• Familiarity working within multidisciplinary teams required
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
