About the Role

Reporting to senior leadership, the Senior Data Analyst (Data Management) specializes in steering comprehensive data management strategies, emphasizing data governance and the robustness of data within warehouses. This role orchestrates the acquisition, storage, and meticulous maintenance of extensive datasets to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and security. The position serves as the primary support for technical data issues and acts as the subject matter expert for internal EPIC Cogito analytic services.

Responsibilities

  • Data Model Design and Maintenance (25%):
    • Lead the design and implementation of high-performance, secure data models within the healthcare system's data warehouse, optimized for efficient data queries and analysis.
    • Refine and maintain existing data models to accommodate evolving data landscapes and user needs.
    • Ensure adherence to healthcare data standards and best practices during data modeling activities.
  • Data Warehousing and Integration (25%):
    • Oversee the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for loading data from EPIC and other disparate sources into the data warehouse, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
    • Collaborate with IT teams to integrate data from diverse healthcare systems and external sources.
    • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipeline issues, proactively identifying and resolving data flow inconsistencies and errors.
  • Data Quality and Governance (15%):
    • Champion data quality initiatives by implementing robust cleaning, validation, and error correction measures.
    • Develop and enforce data governance policies and procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and security of healthcare data.
    • Monitor data quality metrics and conduct regular data audits to identify and address potential data integrity issues.
  • EPIC Cogito Expertise (15%):
    • Serve as the subject matter expert for EPIC Cogito services within the organization, providing guidance and support to users on data extraction, reporting, and analysis functionalities.
    • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports within EPIC Cogito to track key performance indicators and provide insights for clinicians and administrators.
    • Stay informed on the latest EPIC Cogito updates and best practices and advocate for continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Participate in testing reports and extracts during system or business changes.
    • Participate in product upgrades and implementations.
  • Collaboration and Support (10%):
    • Collaborate cross-functionally with stakeholders across the healthcare system to understand data needs, define data requirements, and ensure effective data utilization.
    • Provide technical support and guidance to data analysts, researchers, and other users on data access, retrieval, and interpretation within the data warehouse.
    • Proactively seek opportunities to improve data management processes and communicate potential enhancements to senior leadership.
  • Continuous Improvement (10%):
    • Stay abreast of emerging data management technologies and trends relevant to healthcare.
    • Evaluate and recommend new tools and techniques to optimize data storage, access, and security.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the data management function, fostering a culture of data quality and innovation.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Provide excellent customer service to all customers while performing duties.
    • Lead meetings, prioritize, resolve conflicts, maintain issues lists, and manage a project plan.
    • Demonstrate strong project management and organizational skills.
    • Assist in the development of, or support of, analytic models and datasets.
    • Communicate effectively with project leadership and subject matter experts.
    • Continue to learn the software and increase knowledge over time.
    • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows; complete a Computer Skills Assessment via the learning management system upon hire.

Requirements

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's Degree in IT, business, or healthcare field required.
    • Master's degree in data science, analytics, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience, Training, and Skills:
    • Five or more years of experience in data management roles, preferably within a healthcare setting.
    • Two or more years of experience leading complex data management or analysis projects.
    • Proven ability to develop and manage ETL processes for large-scale healthcare data.
    • Experience with healthcare data standards and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST).
    • Demonstrated success in implementing data governance policies and procedures.
    • Experience working with a healthcare EMR system, ideally EPIC.
    • Proficiency in SQL and relational database concepts.
    • Experience with data warehouse platforms (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services, Teradata, Snowflake).
    • Knowledge of ETL tools (e.g., Informatica PowerCenter, SSIS).
    • Familiarity with data extraction tools from healthcare systems (e.g., EPIC Cogito).
    • Basic understanding of data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
    • In-depth experience and competency with EPIC and Cogito applications including Clarity, Caboodle, Chronicles, Radar, Reporting Workbench, Slicer Dicer, and Analytics Catalog.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate at multiple organizational levels across the health system, including both technical and non-technical staff.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for the position.
  • Must be able to move freely about the facility with or without an assisted device and perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious material; must follow bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, maintain regular and predictable attendance, and stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling; may require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0–33% of the workday) lift or carry 0–10 lbs.
