About the Role
Ingram Marine Group is seeking a Sr. Crane Operator in the Ashland City, TN area to safely and efficiently operate friction cranes and material handlers at a river terminal. This role involves transporting materials, loading/unloading cargo, managing inventory, and maintaining workflow. The Sr. Crane Operator will serve as a subject matter expert, providing mentorship, training, and technical guidance to other associates while ensuring compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Operate friction cranes and material handlers to load and unload cargo efficiently and safely.
- Train other personnel in the operation of cranes and material handlers for handling materials such as grain, coal, steel coils, salt, or other terminal goods.
- Lead by example with safe work practices and operational excellence.
- Mentor and coach crane operators and terminal associates.
- Assist management with evaluating and onboarding new operators, including assessing competency and providing feedback.
- Assist in loading and unloading cargo from vessels, trucks, and rail cars.
- Operate and maintain terminal equipment, including conveyors, door guns, barge loader spouts, and hard car probes.
- Ensure cargo is properly secured and organized for transport or storage.
- Open and close barge cover access doors and remove/reset barge cover tops.
- Monitor and communicate with barge drafters or crane operators regarding barge drafts.
- Perform routine equipment checks and report malfunctions or maintenance needs.
- Follow safety protocols and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, including dock areas, warehouse spaces, and cargo storage areas.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and vessel crew members.
- Troubleshoot operational equipment issues and assist maintenance personnel in identifying root causes.
- Maintain detailed equipment inspection and operational records.
- Serve as the terminal expert on friction crane operations and specialized lifting activities.
- Assist with inventory tracking and reporting discrepancies.
- Perform general labor tasks, such as cleaning, sorting, and organizing goods, tools, and supplies.
- Clean product from pits, barge decks, barge covers, and other areas as necessary.
- Work in varying weather conditions and maintain physical stamina throughout shifts.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks as requested.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED required.
- 4-5 years of experience as a Crane Operator required.
- First Aid & CPR certification required.
- Proven experience operating friction cranes and material handlers, preferably in a river terminal or maritime environment.
- Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in crane operations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment in varying weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.
- Physical fitness to handle the demands of the job, including:
- Regularly lifting loads up to 50 lbs unassisted and occasionally up to 75 lbs.
- Climbing ladders over 20 feet in height while using fall protection.
- Frequently carrying, dragging, and pulling wires, lines, and railcar door opener equipment.
- Frequent bending, twisting, kneeling, and reaching.
- Frequent shoveling, sweeping, and strenuous sledgehammering of railcars.
Working Environment
- Outdoor/indoor working environment with exposure to loud noises, dust, and potentially hazardous materials.
- Shift work may be required, including weekends or holidays, depending on the operation schedule.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety vests, hard hats, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
