About the Role

This position assists in the maintenance and capital projects of process control systems across fractionators, NGL terminals, pipeline assets, gas plants, and storage facilities. The Process Controls Specialist will provide day-to-day support of site distributed control systems (DCS) and process control networks, requiring strong analytical skills to diagnose problems, identify solutions, and facilitate implementation.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance with troubleshooting, optimization, design, configuration, and programming of process control systems essential to terminal and pipeline operations.
• Work directly with the process engineering team to assist in the execution, configuration, programming, testing, and commissioning of APC and MPC projects from design through startup.
• Assist in SIS system recommendations, upgrades, and modifications.
• Lead project execution in implementation, logic development, testing, commissioning, and documentation in accordance with IEC 61511.
• Ensure the integrity of the DCS by monitoring and troubleshooting process control system programming, software, and hardware, including performance monitoring.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams daily to ensure operational reliability of the site.
• Work with Process Control Engineers and project management teams to implement revised and/or new basic process control and advanced control solutions.
• Create logic programming from control narratives/functional specifications and test programming and equipment in a lab or simulated environment.
• Stay current on equipment modifications, software revisions, and industry trends.
• Manage process control system software versioning and work with Operational Technology (OT) staff to ensure reliability of the plant process control network (hardware and software).
• Ensure compliance with corporate IT and cybersecurity policies and guidelines.
• Assist in defining spare parts and preventative maintenance requirements for DCS and related components.
• Support lifecycle management (patching, revisions) of software and firmware, including control system staging environment and patch validation.
• Maintain proper documentation related to the DCS.
• Work with third-party companies and product representatives to assist in design, factory acceptance testing, simulator development, and commissioning and start-up activities.
• Ensure Process Safety and Risk Management objectives are practiced daily through participation in Management of Change, Process Hazards Analysis, and pre-planning.

Working Conditions

• Frequent driving, walking, and standing.
• Exposure to adverse weather, cramped conditions, and some heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs).
• Visits to industrial/manufacturing settings with potential exposure to chemicals, extreme temperatures, loud machinery, and requiring appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators.
• Must be able to climb ladders and stairs, bend, stoop, and respond to visual and auditory signals.
• Occasional overnight travel and ability to work extended periods during turnarounds or commissioning activities.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license for the state of residence.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis.

Requirements

• High School Diploma and 8+ years of relevant job-related experience in process controls.
• Knowledge and experience with control network protocols including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, and Modbus.
• DCS experience developing basic and advanced process control systems, graphics development, and Historian management.
• Knowledge and experience with PLC programming and hardware configuration.
• Familiarity with local and wide area networking concepts, including network topologies, switch configuration, and network security.
• Ability to manage software revisions, site licensing, and support agreements.
• Knowledge of process manufacturing field instrumentation and technology.
• Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and ability to balance multiple projects/tasks simultaneously.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, sound organizational skills, and ability to proactively develop and maintain effective working relationships.
• Competency with personal computer applications (Microsoft Office, etc.).
• Knowledge of industry safety practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Experience in refinery, manufacturing, and/or pipeline environments.
• Competency with Rockwell PLCs, Emerson DeltaV, DeltaV SIS, APC/MPC programming, HMI interface software and hardware, SCADA interface, and third-party historians.
• Knowledge or awareness of relevant industry best practices, codes, and regulations (e.g., API, DOT, ISA, PHMSA, PSM, NFPA, NEC).
