Sr. Consultant, HR Investigations
About the role
The centralized HR Investigation team’s purpose is to promptly and thoroughly conduct all Human Resources investigations in a manner that is fair, unbiased, and consistent with CarMax values. The Sr. Consultant, HR Investigations is responsible for professional response and resolution of CarMax Human Resources investigations. This position manages Associate complaints/concerns and conducts unbiased investigations from intake through resolution, providing outcome recommendations to Region/Store teams.
Responsibilities
- Owns and conducts HR investigations, that are often times complex
- Conducts case intake and ensures all information is correctly documented
- Conducts interviews with all involved parties
- Reviews supporting documentation, and performs research activities and analysis related to the case, if necessary, to inform decision making (e.g. internal precedent, external research)
- Proactively identifies issues for additional analysis, escalation, or partnership
- PARTNERS WITH LEGAL TEAM, COMPLIANCE & ETHICS, ASSET PROTECTION, ASSOCIATE RELATIONS, AND OTHERS AS NEEDED FOR CASES WHOSE OUTCOME CANNOT BE DETERMINED WITHOUT ADDITIONAL EXPERTISE
- Develops resolution recommendations, including performance management, employment decisions, or other warranted outcomes
- PARTNERS WITH INVOLVED PARTIES’ MANAGEMENT TEAM ON NECESSARY BACKGROUND INFORMATION, RECOMMENDED RESOLUTION, AND ANY ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
- Completes proper template for any disciplinary action/coaching and reviews next steps with people manager
- Throughout all activities, operates within case management system to ensure interview notes, supporting evidence, findings, recommended outcomes and case reports are properly documented
- Maintains and updates policies, systems, and other investigation team resources
- SUPPORTS THE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TEAM MEMBERS
- REGULARLY COMMUNICATES RECOMMENDED OUTCOMES TO HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTORS, AND IN SOME INSTANCES REGIONAL VICE PRESIDENTS
Qualifications
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication, and customer service skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
- Ability to dig into an issue and look at the situation from multiple angles, applies different methods to develop conclusions, and anticipates challenges
- Ability to facilitate consensus in decision-making; partners with others as needed
- Ability to provide strong customer service to all parties involved in an investigation
- Ability to own the work, make and follow through on commitments; detail oriented, able to manage multiple issues and meet changing deadlines
- MUST BE FLEXIBLE, ADAPT TO CHANGE EASILY, AND ABLE TO EXERCISE INDEPENDENT DISCRETION ON MATTERS OF SIGNIFICANCE
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferred
- Four or more years of Human Resources or comparable experience, including investigation and case management experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office systems, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Work environment
This role is located in Richmond, Virginia and on-site in office 4 days a week.

Pay
The annual salary for this position is: $83,200.00 - $124,800.00 May be eligible for bonus and equity.
Benefits
Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time. Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible: To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company. For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay. Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
