This position focuses on E&S Brokerage Property, requiring deep technical expertise in Shared/Layered Property and a passion for delivering extraordinary care to customers and partners.

To best support our broker partners across the Western U.S., candidates should be located in this region. The role includes travel for in-person broker meetings and relationship-building activities. Note: This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization, and Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

Responsibilities

  • Research and develop new classes of business, including assessing market viability, creating forms and endorsements, and developing rates with actuarial support.
  • Underwrite individual risks for acceptability, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions, analyzing complex exposures with the highest level of authority for the Excess Casualty line of business.
  • Achieve production and loss ratio goals by managing broker relationships, reviewing claims and loss history, and taking appropriate action on accounts.
  • Oversee policy maintenance, including reviewing endorsement requests, loss control reports, and claim activity, and ensuring compliance with recommendations.
  • Foster positive business relationships with brokers through frequent contact, travel to broker offices, and participation in marketing campaigns.
  • Demonstrate expertise in facultative reinsurance, placing reinsurance per department guidelines, and maintaining strong relationships with reinsurers.
  • Proactively develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external training, and mentor underwriters at all levels.
  • Manage workflow for assigned underwriters, provide coaching and development, and approve referrals exceeding the authority of lower-level underwriters in the Manager’s absence.
  • Represent the department in division and company committees or initiatives.
  • Handle the most complex accounts, devise business solutions, and monitor their effectiveness with minimal direction.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of underwriting experience, with a focus on large or complex accounts; excess & surplus lines experience preferred.
  • Relationship management experience with large wholesale brokers.
  • Strong attention to detail, desk management, and prioritization skills.
  • Data analytics and business insights skills, particularly related to market and competitive research.
  • Experience with a broad range of occupancies and account sizes.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of complex commercial lines underwriting policies, practices, and procedures, including insurance law, rating plans, catastrophe management, and reinsurance (treaty and facultative).
  • Ability to analyze highly complex risks, develop manuscript wording, and apply alternative rating methodologies.
  • Ability to train and mentor underwriters, underwriting assistants, and interns.
  • Advanced decision-making skills for highly complex issues with minimal direction.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree preferred; equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred.
  • Eight years of commercial lines underwriting experience handling large or complex accounts.

Pay

National salary range for this role: $136,000–$242,000. Expected starting salary range: $136,000–$204,000. Placement within this range will depend on skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of the role, location, and market conditions.

Schedule

  • Exempt (not eligible for overtime).
  • Normal office environment with extended and non-standard work hours based on project and customer deliverables.
  • Travel required throughout the Western U.S. for broker meetings and relationship-building activities.
