About the role

The Major Projects Project Manager at Johnson Controls leads significant HVAC Controls construction projects valued at $5M or more in the Indiana market and at customer sites. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the profitable execution of assigned BAS Complex Projects
  • Providing early sales support activities in the TAS and development process, offering insights on strategy, vendor/partner selection, scope enhancements, value engineering, risk assessment, and more
  • Maintaining positive cash flow and actively pursuing change orders
  • Managing company technical resources and subcontractors, overseeing costs, billings, and collections to maintain profitability goals and positive cash flow through timely and accurate project billings
  • Reviewing and interpreting contract Terms and Conditions, analyzing financial reporting systems and project schedules to proactively address potential issues, and effectively communicating project progress, issues, and financial statuses to management as required
  • Risk management and establishment of project recovery plans when necessary, resolving disputes with minimal escalation, preparation and issuance of subcontracts while ensuring project document controls comply with contract requirements and JCI standards
  • Ensuring any engineering and commissioning performed by the field team aligns with established standards and facilitating the escalation of product-related issues
  • Assistance to the Area Management Team and/or sales in project development efforts along with coordination of customer training requirements
  • For select bundled projects, interaction with and direction to Truck Based teams assigned to projects under control may be necessary
  • Self-performance of sales support activities early in the audit process may provide further input on vendor/partner selection, scope enhancements, value engineering, risk assessment, etc., along with self-performance of cost estimating, project scheduling, and project management of assigned projects
  • Development and maintenance of Microsoft Project schedules

Responsibilities

Under general direction, the role involves:

  • Collaboration with Owner and contractor sales managers, branch installation managers, and other teams to provide early sales support activities in the TAS and development process
  • Evaluation of the contractual scope of work and addressing the impact of client-issued bulletins, field directives, and/or scheduling changes to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery
  • Active efforts to seek additional work through change orders, perform associated cost estimates, prepare proposals, and negotiate final settlement prices and customer acceptance
  • Management of company technical resources and subcontractors, overseeing costs, billings, and collections to maintain profitability goals and positive cash flow through timely and accurate project billings
  • Reviewing and interpreting contract Terms and Conditions, analyzing financial reporting systems and project schedules to proactively address potential issues, and effectively communicating project progress, issues, and financial statuses to management as required

Requirements

A minimum of eight (8) years of direct project management experience in the Building Construction Industry is preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, with the ability to convey technical material to a non-technical audience.

Travel will vary based on project assignments, with projects potentially located outside of assigned geography.

Proficiency in Microsoft Project Scheduling software and financial accounting systems is required, along with strong personal computer skills in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project), Adobe Writer, Visio, and basic Windows environment.

Management experience with projects related to Mechanical Retrofits, HVAC controls, BAS management, Fire management, and Security management systems is desired, with HVAC being highly preferred.

A Bachelor’s degree in Construction, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture, or an Associate’s Degree with equivalent work-related experience is preferred.

PMI/PMP Certification is also preferred.

Qualifications

Competitive salary range: $100,100 - 150,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
