About the role

The Senior Communications Manager will lead strategic communications efforts that bring scientific discoveries and health innovations to broader audiences. This role focuses on translating complex research into clear, impactful stories that inform the public and strengthen awareness of critical health initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute multi-year strategic communications plans that promote scientific research, clinical guidelines, scientific statements, and health-related initiatives to media outlets and public audiences.
  • Review scientific manuscripts, research abstracts, and clinical content to identify newsworthy opportunities and translate complex findings into accessible stories.
  • Create press materials, media pitches, news releases, talking points, FAQs, multimedia assets, and other communication resources that highlight scientific advancements.
  • Lead communications efforts for scientific meetings, including selecting research highlights, developing news kits, preparing expert messaging, and coordinating supporting materials.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media organizations, researchers, scientific leaders, and external partners to increase earned media visibility.
  • Prepare research authors and subject matter experts for interviews, media opportunities, and public communications.
  • Monitor traditional and social media trends to identify opportunities, respond to emerging topics, and protect organizational reputation.
  • Collaborate with internal teams across science, publishing, marketing, communications, and program functions to maximize outreach and engagement.
  • Manage multiple communications projects simultaneously while maintaining high-quality standards and meeting deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Science Communication, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience writing and editing content, translating scientific or technical information for public audiences, and applying AP Style guidelines.
  • 5+ years of experience developing media materials, managing press submissions, building journalist relationships, and securing earned media coverage.
  • 5+ years of experience managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced communications environment.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Excellent storytelling, editing, and communication skills with the ability to make complex scientific topics understandable and engaging.
  • Proven ability to develop media strategies, pitch stories, coordinate interviews, and create communication plans that generate visibility.
  • Experience reviewing scientific research, abstracts, or manuscripts and identifying opportunities for media engagement.
  • Strong project management skills with excellent organization, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Previous supervisory experience and experience mentoring communications professionals are preferred.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating successful science, healthcare, or research-focused communications campaigns is highly valued.
