Sr. Category Manager, Technology Services
About the role
McKesson is seeking a seasoned Senior Category Manager to own our Technology Professional Services category end-to-end. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role for a practitioner who combines deep market expertise in Tech Services with the executive presence and relationship skills to serve as a true strategic partner to the business.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end Technology Professional Services category strategy, encompassing staff augmentation, managed services, consulting, outsourced development, and related tech labor models.
- Define multi-year category roadmaps aligned to business technology investments, organizational priorities, and evolving market capabilities.
- Serve as the recognized subject-matter expert and trusted advisor to senior technology, finance, and operational stakeholders on market trends, supplier capabilities, and emerging service models.
- Proactively identify category opportunities and bring forward-thinking, data-backed recommendations without waiting to be asked.
- Lead the structuring and negotiation of sophisticated, multi-phased Technology Services agreements — including MSAs, SOWs, outcome based delivery frameworks, T&M and fixed-fee constructs, and hybrid commercial models.
- Design contract frameworks that appropriately balance business flexibility, risk allocation, IP protection, data security, and performance accountability.
- Drive favorable commercial outcomes on pricing benchmarks, rate cards, SLAs, KPIs, governance cadences, and exit provisions.
- Oversee the full SOW lifecycle within Fieldglass (or equivalent VMS), ensuring compliant intake, structured approvals, and active management against scope and spend.
- Design and lead competitive sourcing events (RFI, RFP, RFQ) for Technology Professional Services engagements of varying scale and complexity.
- Apply best-in-class sourcing methodologies: total cost of ownership analysis, should-cost modeling, supplier scorecarding, competitive benchmarking, and market intelligence.
- Build and maintain a rationalized, tiered supplier ecosystem — balancing preferred-vendor depth with competitive tension.
- Manage supplier performance through structured governance, KPI/SLA tracking, QBRs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Establish yourself as an embedded strategic partner to Technology, Engineering, Finance, Legal, and HR leaders — understanding their roadmaps and ensuring sourcing strategy is a true enabler.
- Translate business requirements into sourcing and commercial strategies that stakeholders trust and champions.
- Influence sourcing adoption and procurement policy compliance through credibility and education, not just process enforcement.
- Communicate complex commercial and market insights clearly and persuasively to audiences ranging from project managers to C-suite executives.
- Deliver and track measurable value: cost savings, cost avoidance, risk mitigation, cycle time improvements, and supplier quality gains.
- Provide monthly savings forecasts and maintain a transparent pipeline of category initiatives with expected timelines and outcomes.
- Leverage data and analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau, spend analytics platforms) to generate actionable category insights and support decision-making.
- Establish, monitor, and report on KPIs and category health metrics to leadership.
- Proactively identify and mitigate sourcing, supplier, contractual, and operational risks across the Technology Services portfolio.
- Champion procurement policy adherence, ethical sourcing standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Continuously improve sourcing processes, tools, and templates — bringing structure and repeatability to complex, bespoke engagements.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent and typically requires 7+ years of relevant experience.
- 7-10 years of progressive experience in strategic sourcing, category management, or procurement, with a minimum of 5 years focused specifically on Technology Professional Services.
- Demonstrated track record structuring and negotiating complex, multi-phased Technology Services agreements at significant scale (consulting, managed services, staff augmentation, outsourced development).
- Proven ability to influence and partner with senior technology and business stakeholders in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
- Experience managing the full SOW lifecycle within a VMS platform (Fieldglass preferred).
Skills
- Deep knowledge of the Technology Professional Services market: vendor landscape, commercial models (T&M, fixed-fee, milestone, outcome-based), rate card benchmarking, and industry pricing dynamics.
- Strong contract expertise: ability to read, draft, and redline MSAs, SOWs, and amendments with a working knowledge of key legal and risk provisions.
- Proficiency in data and analytics tools (Excel, Power BI, Tableau) and procurement platforms (SAP Ariba, Coupa, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with contingent workforce management, Managed Service Provider (MSP) models, and VMS governance.
Core Competencies
- Strategic Thought Leadership: Brings a point of view. Stays ahead of market trends and proactively shapes category strategy rather than reacting to business demand.
- Executive Presence & Influence: Communicates with clarity and confidence at all levels. Builds trust with senior stakeholders quickly.
- Commercial Acumen & Negotiation: Expert negotiator who understands leverage, risk, and value beyond price. Structures deals that serve both short-term needs and long-term business flexibility.
- Execution Discipline: Delivers. Manages multiple concurrent initiatives with rigor, keeps stakeholders informed, and sees work through from strategy to signature to supplier performance.
- Analytical & Data-Driven Mindset: Grounds recommendations in facts and data. Translates market intelligence and spend analytics into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders and leadership.
- Resilience & Adaptability: Maintains composure and effectiveness amid ambiguity, competing priorities, and organizational change.
