Sr. Associate Software Engineer (Healthcare Data Integration)

About the role
McKesson is looking for a Sr Associate Software Engineer to build a modern healthcare data integration platform. This role focuses on developing scalable backend services that ingest, transform, and deliver patient data across systems, helping power clinical workflows and new healthcare products.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain backend microservices using TypeScript (Node.js/NestJS) in an event-driven architecture.
- Build and support integrations that ingest, enrich, and distribute patient data from external EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
- Work with healthcare data standards such as FHIR R4 and platforms like Aidbox FHIR Server.
- Design and implement APIs leveraging REST, SMART on FHIR, OAuth 2.0, and OpenID Connect.
- Write and optimize PostgreSQL queries, schemas, and data models.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and ArgoCD on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and agile ceremonies (Scrum / SAFe).
- Monitor system performance with tools like Datadog and support troubleshooting in production.
- Collaborate with Product, QA, and Architecture teams to deliver features supporting clinical data workflows.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent and typically requires 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Foundational experience with JavaScript or TypeScript, particularly in backend or API development.
- Understanding of REST APIs, relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred), and distributed/event-driven systems.
- Experience working in a team-based, agile development environment.
- Familiarity with Git version control and Linux/containerized environments.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a collaborative setting.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with NestJS, Kafka, or Kubernetes.
- Exposure to healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, X12, NCPDP).
- Familiarity with EHR integrations and healthcare data environments.
- Exposure to frontend frameworks (React or Angular) for occasional UI contributions.
- Experience working in corporate or large-scale development environments.
- Basic familiarity with AI-assisted development tools or code generation tools.
- Knowledge of HIPAA/PHI handling and compliance standards.
- Experience with event-driven or CQRS architectures.
- Experience in Agile or Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) practices.
