About the Role

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services, managing itself under principles that guide any successful maintenance service business. This is a term position.

Responsibilities

• Installs, modifies, inspects, and tests all types of water-based fire suppression systems and associated equipment.
• Fabricates, installs, modifies, and repairs associated piping systems.
• Installs and repairs flow control valves, fire pumps, and sprinkler devices.
• Performs all installation, maintenance, and inspection in accordance with applicable standards (National Fire Protection Association, Life Safety Code, Massachusetts State Building Code, and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements).
• Interprets and updates mechanical plans, drawings, and prints as necessary.
• Assists in the inspection and testing of other fire safety systems, including fire alarms, extinguishers, fire escapes, and hydrants.
• Provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance and operations.
• Assists and advises customers on fire suppression system solutions and provides follow-up on progress and status of work.
• Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.
• May work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
• Observes and complies with all standard safety codes and practices; performs work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.
• Wears a clean, neat uniform and maintains a professional image at all times.
• Wears safety equipment and clothing when appropriate or required.
• Works in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
• Accepts a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs.
• Supplies a complete set of hand tools.

Working Conditions

• Critical Operations Personnel: Required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management.
• Must be able to stoop, bend repeatedly, and work in awkward positions (e.g., hands and knees) for extended periods.
• Must lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and assist in pushing, pulling, or transporting piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs. (may use chain falls and come-alongs for heavier lifting).
• Must walk to and from various buildings or work sites carrying tools, equipment, and other essentials.
• Must work alone, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures.
• Must climb multiple sets of stairs and work off ladders, staging, lifts, or other elevated platforms.

Requirements

• Five years of related experience in the installation, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of water-based fire suppression systems.
• Current State Journeyman or higher Sprinkler license; State Contractor License preferred.
• Valid driver’s license.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Experience and proficiency in using industry-recognized diagnostic testing equipment.
• Able to perform mathematical calculations required to accurately size and install system components and devices.
• Able to read and interpret detailed plans, drawings, specifications, operating manuals, and other written materials associated with this trade.
• Effective communication and interaction with peers and customers.
• Proficiency in desktop and smartphone technology platforms and applications.
• Familiarity with equipment diagnostics, bar-coding, and related technologies desired.

Schedule

• 40 hours per week.
• Sunday: Off
• Monday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Tuesday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Wednesday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Thursday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Friday: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Saturday: Off

Pay

$52.34 per hour.

This is a 12-month term position after the date of hire.
