Springdale Municipal Complex
Springdale is the fourth largest city in the state, located between Bentonville and Fayetteville in northwest Arkansas. Between 1990 and 2010, it experienced a 133% growth in population. Designed to meet the growth for the next 20 years, the new 122,481-square-foot municipal complex houses a state-of-the-art police facility and a district court, including partial renovation of the existing city administration building. The project was led by Duvall Decker through the Walton Family Foundation’s Northwest Arkansas Design Excellence Program.
The design aspires to meet the functional and growth needs of Springdale with an environmentally mature facility that reflects the city’s values. The project is sited to form a new northern gateway into downtown Springdale, providing direct linkages to Turnbow Park, Shiloh Memorial Park, and the Razorback Greenway.
Project Features
- Three public rooms: the council chamber, the district court, and the police training facility, designed as the most important civic figures in the complex
- Architecturally established public rooms overlooking a new public green
- Internal agora/hall connecting all three functions with a single secure entrance under the council chamber
- Programming planned for 20 years of growth with economical, flexible, and durable design solutions
- Exterior combining brick and precast concrete skin with dynamic light and shadow patterns
- Interior materials: ground-face concrete block walls, polished concrete floors, and exposed painted steel
- Civic rooms upgraded with natural light, park and city views, acoustic wood paneling, and oak-trimmed steel trusses
